10,000 Birds Conservation Club joint give-away

Did I or did I not write that January would be an interesting time for the 10,000 Birds Conservation Club? (I’m sure I did, I’m just not sure where now…)

the birder's libraryAnyway, January is proving to be a cracker for what is essentially still a relatively new conservation initiative (we only launched in November 2009).

  • Just a few days ago the wonderful Wren paid for FOUR memberships to the club through a competition on her blog Wrenaissance Reflections;
  • we have a competition running right now to win two copies of Steve Hutchcraft’s excellent ‘alphabet and birds’ childrens’ book ‘B is for Bufflehead‘;
  • and now we are launching our first ever ‘joint’ give-away with Grant McCreary of the superb The Birder’s Library - a site packed with insightful reviews of (mainly) birding books.

    The Birder’s Library is a site I visit regularly, which I really enjoy, and would recommend to anyone. Grant himself is a member of the Conservation Club (which is NOT why I wrote the above recommendation by the way!) and wrote a very welcome post entitled “Do something for the Birds“, which urged visitors to his site to join the Club and included such - and dare I use the word again: yes I dare - insightful sentences as “…it’s worth joining just for the fact that you know that your money is going directly to help threatened species, and that you will have a voice in how it is actually spent. I’ve already joined, and if you enjoy having birds around, you should consider it as well.” (Talking of which we will be asking Members very soon whether they’d like to support a project in the Caribbean.)

    Hurrah. Those are the kind of words that makes the effort of running this Club worthwhile (excuse me as I wipe a small tear from the corner of my eye…)

    Anyway, now Grant has offered to further back up his words. He’s donated a package of TWO books (one member will win both books) that he’s reviewed on his site in a joint give-away with us: Pete Dunne’s ‘Prairie Spring: A Journey Into the Heart of a Season‘ and Kate Davis’ ‘Falcons of North America‘.

    He could have kept both books himself (he certainly liked them both and I know he’s a huge fan of Pete Dunne’s writing, describing it as “…humorous, insightful, educational, and just plain fun to read, his prose is amazing”), he could have done a give-away on his own site, but - no - he decided to support the 10,000 Birds Conservation Club instead by giving both books away and for that we are extremely grateful.

    It strikes me that at this point I should make it absolutely clear that though we normally only give away products specifically donated to the Club by the author or their publisher neither Pete Dunne nor Kate Davis have endorsed or are endorsing the 10,000 Birds Conservation Club through this give-away. I hope that they would if they knew about it, but I don’t imagine that they do and they’ve not been contacted. These books are Grant’s and it’s his decision to use them to support us in this way.

    So, how can you (that’s ‘you’ as in one person) win both of these two excellent books courtesy of Grant McCreary at The Birder’s Library:

    Click the button above to join
    The 10,000 Birds Conservation Club - easy eh…

    Firstly of course you need to be a member of the 10,000 Birds Conservation Club because only members can enter (remember, the joining fee is just 25USD or equivalent and ALL the money - bar PayPal’s costs and postage if we need to send books out ourselves - go to support conservation projects).

    Secondly you need to answer the following question by 24:00 GMT 08th FEBRUARY 2010.

    In his review of one of my favourite books of last year, Anthony McGeehan’s ‘Birding from the Hip’ (BftH), Grant quotes a passage from BftH about the effect of hearing which BIRD SPECIES sing?

    conservation club logoPlease send your answer to charlie10000birds - AT - gmail.com using the email address with which you joined the Conservation Club - and if you could use ‘CClub: grant’ in the subject line that would be a great help.

    The winner will be notified by email no later than THREE days after the closing date.

    *Please note that as Grant will be sending these books out himself to save us postage costs, the winner will need to provide him his or her mailing address.

    And don’t forget, Conservation Club members can enter (and win?) every single give-away competition we hold for the whole year of their membership - and we don’t keep any of the membership fee, we use it to fund conservation projects! Really, what’s holding you back? Hit that ‘Subscribe’ button now and have a year’s worth of fun for just 25USD/15GBP!
