Malta’s hunters have been shooting rare birds of prey YET again. The Times of Malta reports that one of 16 Lesser Spotted Eagles that in all cost €1 million to protect in Germany was shot and wounded on Sunday. Corey’s post on looking for a Eurasian Collared Dove last week (Couldn’t collar a Collared Dove) ended with the words, “And if you European birders are snickering to yourselves about this failed twitch (yes, this means you Charlie), well, how many Mourning Doves did you see today?” Collared Doves are of course common in my [...]
Welcome to 10,000 Birds! With so many new visitors arriving every day, we felt an overview of the site might be in order. After all, we wouldn’t be very gracious hosts if you showed up here and we didn’t take the time to give you a tour, would we?

This splendid moment of equipoise between the diurnal and nocturnal sees a myriad of creatures great and small caught up in the relentless throes of zugunruhe. It’s a natural fact, this seasonally recurring restlessness, this implacable urge to migrate. Millions [...]
