Organisation: The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES), Singapore. http://www.acres.org.sg

Who are we? The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) was founded by a group of Singaporeans and registered as a society on 24th May 2001 (Registration No.: 176/2001). It was registered under the Charities Act on 11th January 2005 (Registration No.: 1849) and registered as an Institution of Public Character on 1st June 2007 (Registration no. IPC000559).

Aims of the Organisation: ACRES aims to:

  • Foster respect and compassion for all animals.
  • Improve the living conditions and welfare of animals in captivity.
  • Educate people on lifestyle choices which do not involve the abuse of animals and which are environment-friendly.

Membership: We currently have more than 4,000 individuals on our supporter database. Acres members receive our twice-yearly newsletter containing news, campaign updates and features from the world of animal welfare. Members receive regular email updates on news from Acres and invitations to Acres social events. All members also have full access to our library of books, magazines and other resources on animals and animal welfare issues. Membership details can be found here.

ACRESConservation: ACRES strongly believes in promoting community involvement in tackling animal welfare issues and in building partnerships with all related bodies to improve animal welfare. We use research to educate the public to promote active community involvement in the animal welfare movement, as well as strive towards synergistic partnerships with authorities and related parties.

ACRES has conducted more than 170 roadshows and/or talks to raise awareness on animal welfare issues in Singapore and to create a more socially responsible community.

Website: The Society’s website, at http://www.acres.org.sg, contains a wealth of information including recent news, details of campaigns, and information about roadshows and upcoming events.

Additional Info: ACRES is currently putting the finishing touches to the Acres Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC), which will be the first wildlife rescue centre in Singapore and will help save and improve the lives of vast numbers of animals. With your support the AWRC will:

  • Help end the cruel illegal wildlife trade through serving as an educational facility. The AWRC will create awareness on the illegal wildlife trade and other animal protection issues.
  • Provide a safe haven for animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
  • Serve as a platform to promote volunteerism in Singapore and globally.
  • Complement and assist the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority’s enforcement efforts to tackle the illegal wildlife trade.

The ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre is a S$1,091,000 project, and the funding raised as of October 2007 is S$ 650,000. We are therefore still in need of S$ 441,000 for the first year’s operation, after which our programmes will make the facility self sustainable.

Please contact Charlie (charlie - AT- 10000birds.com) if you would like to take part. There are no terms or conditions (other than that we reserve the right to decide what gets posted on 10,000 Birds), but it would help us post the “sell” more quickly if you or your group could write it yourself following a format similar to the one above.
