A quick “Med Gull” Quiz

By Charlie October 21, 2008 3 comments

Yesterday I posted some photos of an adult non-breeding Mediterranean Gull Larus melanocephalus I took at Radipole Lake in Dorset (right here in fact). Now that we’re all experts at Med Gull ID (yes, that was irony as I still find them pretty tough sometimes), how about a quick quiz?

I took this photo on the same day and at the same site. There are no prizes on offer, but can you find any Med Gulls in amongst the Black-headed Gulls (and don’t worry about any birds that have been sliced in half or are hardy visible - they’re all Black-headeds)?

  1. I’m hopeless, on this quiz. I might venture one but I would really have to familiarize myself with gull identification to feel qulified to estimate this one. I hope else out there someone can do a better job!

  2. I can make out three, one of each age group (1st winter, 2nd winter, ad winter).
The adults are very special birds with their all-white wing tips.
Cheers (I promise to email soon, my friend, well some day for sure!!)

  3. Typical - you go and put up a quiz safe in the knowledge that Jochen hasn’t been seen for months and he pops up and gives the answer within minutes! He’s darn good that Jochen…
Okay, let’s change this a little: as Jochen said there are three Med Gulls of three different ages in the above photo: can you find them? (And I don’t want anyone called Mochen, or Jocsen, or Joahen putting the answer up until tonight :))
