Asia’s Vultures on verge of extinction

“Wild Asian vultures could become extinct in 10 years unless officials stop the use of a livestock drug that has caused the birds to decline faster than the dodo, British and Indian scientists said on Wednesday.” The full, depressing story is on the BirdLife website.

  1. There are, perhaps, a few positives in this depressing story:
At least we know the cause and it does appear to be a single cause. Whilst things look bad now we have the tools at hand and (with the exception of the presence of this drug) the habitat remains suitable. The positive spin is that decisive action can save these animals.

  2. Let us hope we will see the same development we witnessed after the use of DDT was banned: slow but steady increase.
As the saying goes in German: Hope dies last - die Hoffnung stirbt zuletzt.
