The month of June has passed, giving way to the first full month of summer in the northern hemisphere. Summer can be boring from a birding standpoint or it can be very, very interesting. How has yours been so far?
Since Corey fled NYC this weekend, I took over his Atlantic coast shore patrol. While I saw a number of tasty shore species, I most appreciated the behemoth Great Black-backed Gulls, which I’ve missed since I’ve moved upstate. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was Cliff Swallow, a number of which are nesting in a shopping center in Ulster, NY.

My best bird of the weekend was a Least Flycatcher singing at Sugar Pine Point State Park near South Lake Tahoe. The park was great for all the Sierra birds including Pine Grosbeak, Black-backed Woodpecker and Williamson’s Sapsucker. It was a great spot.
My best bird was Reddish Egret feeding on the shoreline of Ponce Inlet this past Saturday.
Not too much happening in these parts of Chicago (especially since there was a weekend-long dance music fest at Montrose Point) but before it booted up last week, I was fortunate to get some good looks at a juvenile Forster’s Tern hanging out with the RBGs and Herrings.

I’ve been working on my warbler ID skills here in Idaho. Found a yellow warbler nest an got to watch both male and female.
My bird of the week was a talking mynah bird. I visited it at a friend’s house. Very fun!
