First off, no, we will not be eating birds nor looking at birds that are about to be eaten in this quiz. Instead, we will be looking at images of birds on porcelain plates that I saw in the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a recent visit. Let me state for the record that I have no idea whatsoever what birds are actually on these plates except that all of them depict Asian birds, or, at least, are supposed to depict Asian birds, so this quiz will therefore have no answer post. All we have to go on to determine the identities of the birds in the pictures below is what you all come up with in the comments. So, have at it!
Are these birds real? Or did they only exist in the minds of long dead artists? If they are real what are they? Let us know in the comments…
1 – Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush
2 – Pink-headed Warbler
3 – Great Crested Flycatcher
4 – African Green Broadbill
Okay, next quiz please…
Oh wait, wait:
1 – Hawfinch
2 – Hawfinch
3 – Hawfinch
4 – Hawfinch
Not sure about the rest, but I think the first two images depict the Pitohui, newly discovered to be poisonous, which may have been an attempt by the plate painter to warn any diner about the hostess’ culinary skills. The second bird looks like a permutation of a Java rice finch, with some artistic license in the pink coloring. The third bird, I’m sorry, but as a bird painter I recognize made up shizz when I see it. The last bird looks like some kind of Asian broadbill to me. Probably has the strongest chance of actually turning out to be a real species. Clearly, I am much too lazy to do my homework on this stuff. Just like you. Love the idea!
LOL, love Julie’s comment about the shizz. I have no clue, but the last oen does look Broadbill-like.
I don’t know what any of the birds are. There seems to be a second bird at the top of the third plate. Maybe it’s just a depiction of the perched bird in flight.
If you don’t get IDs here, maybe you should send this to Charlie’s brother.
That last one looks like it was modeled on a terribly prepared Tody mount.
@Jochen: I said that there would be no answer, but, well, you’re wrong! Every single guess, wrong! Ha! 🙂
@Julie: Laziness rules! But I will say that your laziness is much more informed than mine…
@Patrick: Agreed.
@John: Well, I’ll be…looks vaguely turkey-like.
@Nate: That would be the worst tody in the world!
@Corey: the things people will say to get over not having Hawfinch on their life list…
🙂
