The Center for Biological Diversity has filed a petition with the California Fish and Game Commission to get the Black-backed Woodpecker protection in California. The bird, dependent on beetles that exist in “post-fire snag-forests,” has been declining with the increase in salvage logging that removes partially burnt trees, depriving the woodpecker of needed food. The Record-Searchlight has the story (and some seriously demented commenters).
Thanks for sharing this info! I didn’t realize that the black-backeds were on decline. Sounds like their just another bird to add to the list. Hope they receive the protection that they need.
Seriously demented. What the Hell do they put in the water in that part of the world??
