Caption Competition - the winning entries

A Guide to the Birds of East Africa - A Novel More fun to support “The Small African Fellowship for Conservation” our serious campaign to help save the Sharpe’s Longclaw (the what now? click right here to find out). I asked last week for your ’snarky’ or otherwise captions to the photo below (me and a whale on the kind of diet plan that most sensible people don’t force on cetaceans anymore), and in they came. Some were disrespectful (hurrah), a few were downright rude (my favourites in fact), and a few were blatant attempts to flatter and smooth-talk me (which was very nice - I must give away people’s books more often…).

Anyway, the best five captions have won for their writers a copy of the splendid “A Guide to the Birds of East Africa: a Novel” generously donated - for absolutely free and specifically for this campaign - by the author Nick Drayson and the publishers Penguin Group

Caption Competition

Thanks very much to one and all for having a go, and for supporting our conservation campaign. I really hate having to choose a winner (or a loser depending on how you look at it) in competitions like these - but fortunately I didn’t have to as I got my wife-to-be Jo to do it for me instead. So in no particular order at all, here are the five captions that she chose (with my comments added afterwards):

  • “Evolution progressed quickly in the Moores family. Here Charlie poses with his great-grandfather, the last in the family line to roam the open seas.” (Drew, flattery and snark at the same time - great)
  •

  • “Having noted the bird to his right was a) white and b) had a big pointy bit on the front Charlie delightedly added Great White Egret to his lifelist and headed to the reserve’s cafe for a celebratory cup of tea.” (Tai Haku, ha…a comment on why my Year List is going so well (probably)…good one)
  •

  • “Charlie tried to look casual when he was caught with the tips of his fingers trapped in Ms Blue.” (Jeanie, we’re both shocked and still smiling!)
  •

  • “Fortunately, the whale did not eat Charlie. Unfortunately, he did not return the favor.”(Wren, what can I say, I have appetite issues…)
  •

  • “Hmmmmm, the rib structure does look similar…maybe if I suck it in a bit more…or is it just this shirt?” (Jack, damn it, you know me so well)

Good stuff, eh. The winners have been emailed and I’ll send out their prizes asap.

In the meantime, I know everyone’s feeling the credit crunch right now and that there are chuggers on every street corner asking for our small change but if you could feel it in your heart to donate to help Dominic Kamau Kamani save the Endangered Sharpe’s Longclaw- and every dollar REALLY helps - please Chip In using the widget to the right.

Thanks again to our two sponsors, Penguin and Eagle Optics (who have given Dominic a brand new pair of binoculars), and every blogger and webmaster who’s linked to the project.

Like to offer us a product to “give-away” in support of the “Small African Fellowship for Conservation“? We’re happy to give you as much publicity/promotion as we can to say thanks. Please email Charlie (charlie10000birds AT gmail DOT com).
