While the year 2012 was rather dismal for me as far as birding is concerned, it did allow me to plan 2013 carefully to make it a great year for birding. The trips I have lined up for 2013 include winter trips to Long Island, New York and northeastern Minnesota, spring trips to Jamaica and southeastern Arizona, and a multi-month odyssey guiding and birding in Brazil — and who knows, I might have a few more things up my sleeves after that as well!

What are my goals this year as a birder? Try and travel through as many different areas, picking up experiences, seeing as many birds, and admiring as many landscapes and ecosystems along the way. For the first time since I started using it, I will be entering every single year bird I see into eBird. I foresee passing my previous personal best year list (1,036)  and seeing my 2,000th world bird in 2013.

January Highlights: the month started off very well with my Big Day in Miami-Dade on January 1st, incuding birds such as Tropical Kingbird, Sedge Wren, Hermit Thrush, and Vermilion Flycatcher. However, most of the excitement came from two short trips up north. The first took me to Long Island, New York where I had my life Red Crossbill, White-winged Crossbill, Barrow’s Goldeneye, and Northern Saw-whet Owl among others. The second took me to northeastern Minnesota where I saw a slew of winter finches, Great Gray Owl, Northern Hawk-Owl, and Snowy Owl. Finally, I attended the Space Coast Birding Festival — always a treat — and added specialties such as Florida Scrub-Jay and a vagrant Eurasian Wigeon to my year list.

February Highlights: this month had me focusing more on birding in Florida, starting off with a day trip to the Tampa-St. Petersburg area to see my life Black-legged Kittiwake and shorebirding along the coast on my way back. I focused on the Palm Beach area on a trip in the latter half of the month, seeing the continuing La Sagra’s Flycatcher and Neotropic Cormorant along with both Black-bellied and Fulvous Whistling-Ducks.

March Highlights: pretty much a continuation of February, adding Florida specialties such as Snail Kite, Bachman’s Sparrow, and Red-cockaded Woodpecker from mini-trips to points further north in the state. Early migrants such as Black-necked Stilt and Barn Swallow made it onto the list, as well as some pleasant surprises in the form of Orchard Oriole and Hooded Warbler which are less common migrants.

April Highlights: arrival of a smattering of migrants into Florida such as Roseate Tern, Antillean Nighthawk, Chimney Swift, and Gray Kingbird gave the year list a modest boost. A trip towards the end of the month to Jamaica added 49 species to the year list, including all of the Jamaican endemics and several Caribbean specialties such as Greater Antillean Elaenia, Northern Potoo, and West Indian Whistling-Duck.

BlueLagoon10000

Beautiful Blue Lagoon in Jamaica.

May Highlights: What a month! I had my first birding trip to southeast Arizona — a trip that I feel is almost like a rite of passage for every birder living in the United States. The many birding highlights included Olive Warbler (a stunning male), Mexican Chickadee (East Turkey Creek Rd junction), Common Black-Hawk (Old Beeline Hwy, on a nest), numerous Gray Vireos (at Mount Ord), Black-chinned Sparrow (Mount Ord), five species of owl seen, White-eared, Lucifer, and Violet-crowned Hummingbirds, Thick-billed Kingbird, Crissal and Bendire’s Thrasher, Golden Eagle feeding on roadkill on the way to Portal, hearing Buff-collared Nightjar (and hitching a ride with Melody Kehl on the way to hear it), Five-striped Sparrow, and a cool side trip to Flagstaff where I found a Lewis’s Woodpecker nest next to the city’s medical center and an American Three-toed Woodpecker at Lockett Meadow. Thank you to the many birders who helped me along the way with advice, rides, or even just great company. I had a blast! I added over 100 species to my year list, 42 life birds, and even a new family (Olive Warbler). My only miss was Montezuma Quail… next time.

After 8 full days of birding, about 4,000 miles of travel across the state, and only about 4-5 hours of sleep per night, I felt energized and inspired more than ever for my biggest trip ever — Brazil, involving a trip to the Cerrado and Pantanal, 2.5 months of guiding at Cristalino Lodge in the southern Amazon Basin, and a three week adventure with Brazilian birder Dalcio Dacol in southeast Brazil from Linhares to Intervales and out to Serra da Canastra. A 1,000+ year list is in the making…

Lockett Meadow

Lovely alpine scenery near Flagstaff, Arizona.

July Highlights: My big Brazil trip began at the end of July at Chapada dos Guimaraes and the Pantanal, where I got to live the storied spectacle of seeing huge concentrations of storks, herons, and ibis as well as enjoy Pantanal specialties such as Chestnut-bellied Guan, Fawn-breasted Wren, and Great Rufous Woodcreeper.

Pantanal Dawn

Dawn in the Pantanal of Brazil.

August Highlights: My guiding experience at Cristalino Jungle Lodge began on August 1st. With the help of Eduardo Patrial, I spent the first couple of weeks undertaking the daunting task of learning so many new calls, behaviors, and habitat preferences of a new set of birds in an imposing environment of 50 meter tall trees and thick undergrowth. I got to see many species I was looking forward the most to seeing, including Black-girdled Barbet, Red-fan Parrot, and Black-bellied Cuckoo. I also saw some real world rarities such as Alta Floresta Antpitta, Dotted Tanager, and Fiery-tailed Awlbill.

Cristalino Sunset

Sunset over the Teles Pires River in the southern Amazon Basin of Brazil.

September Highlights: This was a big month for me at Cristalino Jungle Lodge, serving as the local guide for Road Scholars, Rockjumper, and even Victor Emmanuel himself. I gathered an enormous amount of experience during this time, and despite the difficult Amazonian environment, consistently delivered good birds to client after client. This month was rich in bird highlights as well — I caught up with stunners such as Zigzag Heron, Pavonine Cuckoo, and Banded Antbird (which almost flew right into Jon King after using the right playback). I also had incredible views of a Harpy Eagle that perched near the lodge for several days in a row!

October Highlights: Despite having spent two months at Cristalino Jungle Lodge at this point, I was still regularly picking up new species, including Pavonine Quetzal and Chestnut-belted Gnateater. The last bird I showed to a client there was a Zigzag Heron — a fitting bird to finish my experience. On the evening of October 16th, I found myself in Rio de Janeiro having dinner with Dalcio Dacol before having to retreat back to our hotel due to street protests! Southeast Brazil quickly turned out to be a “life bird mine” — it might as well be on an alternate Neotropical continent as almost everything was new. The grasslands of Serra da Canastra were spectacular with its toy airplane Cock-tailed Tyrants, skulking Brasilia Tapaculo, and cute Sharp-tailed Tyrants. Other excellent birds during our travels included Black-capped Piprites, Red-and-white Crake, Black-fronted Piping-Guan, Gray-bellied Hawk, and Russet-winged Spadebill.

November Highlights: I was still birding away in Brazil during the first half of November, seeing Three-toed Jacamars at the traditional site on Carmo Road, Red-billed Curassow, Red-browed Parrot, and Ochre-marked Parakeets at Linhares, and Restinga Antwren near Praia Seca. On the 8th of November, I parted ways with Dalcio Dacol and headed towards Cananeia to see a handful of desired species: Red-tailed Parrot, Azure Jay, and Restinga Tyrannulet. My long awaited journey through Brazil having come to an end, I was exhausted and glad that I was going home — just in time, as my iPod had died, my hiking shoes were in the garbage, and half of my clothing had developed holes!

December Highlights: December saw me in Thailand with good friend and British birder Andy Walker. It was my first ever trip to the Oriental region, and I was awestruck by the wildlife, culture, and landscapes — it was everything I had hoped it would be. We scored Spoon-billed Sandpiper on the first morning, and our success kept growing from there — Chinese Egret, Rusty-cheeked Hornbill, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, Eared Pitta, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Blue Pitta, Ultramarine Flycatcher, Golden Bush-Robin, Giant Nuthatch… I could go on and on about all the wonderful highlights of an incredible trip. I look forward to returning to this region soon! My last bird of the year was on Doi Lang in the form of the bizarre Spot-breasted Parrotbill (with Black-throated Tit coming in just minutes before). What a great ending to such a great year!

Written by Carlos
A native of southern Florida, Carlos Sanchez has had a fascination with wildlife as far back as he can remember combined with an unquenchable thirst to learn -- the first books he checked out of the library were Beehler's "Birds of New Guinea" and Stiles and Skutch's "Birds of Costa Rica." Despite his parent's belief that he would 'grow out of it,' Carlos's passion has never wavered, and he has dabbled in everything from bird art to taxonomy. His passion has interwoven with his interest in travel, having birded extensively throughout the United States, eastern Australia, Thailand and Ecuador along with shorter jaunts to other locales such as Puerto Rico and Jamaica. In 2013, Carlos was a resident naturalist and birding guide at Cristalino Lodge in Brazil. If you would like to make a trip to southern Florida in search of Caribbean specialties, exotics, or general birding, please visit www.ecoavian.com to inquire about his guiding services.
