From the American Bird Conservancy:
The mayor of Albuquerque and the director of the city’s animal welfare department have been named in a lawsuit alleging that the officials have committed animal cruelty by allowing certain illegal and improper animal management practices to occur related to abandonment of stray cats.
The lawsuit was filed with the state of New Mexico, county of Bernalillo, Second Judicial District Court by attorney A. Blair Dunn on behalf of Marcy Britton, a resident of Albuquerque.
The lawsuit alleges that the City of Albuquerque partnered with animal advocate groups to implement a Trap, Neuter, Return (TNR) program in which stray or feral cats are trapped, sterilized, vaccinated, and then abandoned at the location at which they were trapped. Britton’s lawsuit claims that the abandonment constitutes cruelty to animals as defined specifically by Albuquerque ordinances and state law. The suit says that animal groups are paid by the city for their actions and that the abandonment of the animals takes place regardless of whether there is food or shelter available.
Three cheers for Marcy Britton! Here’s hoping she is successful and a major American city stops the pointless deaths of wild animals at the claws and teeth of cats that do not deserve to be abandoned to the outdoors, which clearly shortens their lives and presents a menace to public health.
And if you want to take a moment to donate a few dollars to the American Bird Conservancy’s Cats Indoors program that would be absolutely awesome. They do great work!
Let the comment tsunami begin!
Awesome!
Yes, TNR has really been discredited. The intent comes from the right place, but at some point you have to concede defeat in the face of the evidence. Unfortunately, though, I don’t see any viable alternative being offered here. for these poor cats, whose lives are the product of some of the worst humanity has to offer.
One could read between the lines and believe the intent is for these cats to be euthanized, en masse, to eliminate the threat. Sure, there may be some “slots” available at no-kill shelters and foster homes, but in my experience, the sheer number of feral and abandoned cats far outnumbers these. What does the city of Albuquerque actually propose should happen to these cats?
Education and enforcement are of paramount importance, sure, but what happens to the cats in the meantime?
I guess it’s a mess of “our” making, and we have to pay the price for cleaning it up.
And yes, please donate to the Cats Indoors program! And for crying out loud, keep your cats INSIDE.

What I don’t understand is why stupid people don’t get their pets neutered? I live out in the country and see cats along side the road all the time that people have dumped because they aren’t smart enough to have their pets neutered. Obviously I don’t see those cats for very long. Do folks really think that a cat can survive in the open on its own with all the predators that live out there? Really? No. They are simply irresponsible humans.
Good post. I learn something new and challenging on websites I stumbleupon on a daily basis.
It’s always useful to read articles from other writers and practice a
little something from their web sites.
