Colorado’s Dove hunting season begins

The absolute absurdity of grown men getting pleasure from blasting small doves into pieces is succinctly explored by Born Free USA’s Monica Engebretson in a powerful blog titled “What the heck is wrong with some people?“. What indeed? Come on, you brave hunters, explain just what it is that makes you feel so good about pitting your ‘wits’ and rifles against 5 ounces of feathers?

  1. I don’t get it either, and was really, really glad when Michigan voters did NOT approve the referendum to allow dove hunting here.

  2. I get why people enjoy hunting. Being able to shoot an object out of the sky truly is a skill. There is a simple brute pleasure in blowing things up and making loud noises. Early man had to hunt to survive and some of that “instinct” still remains a part of our genetics. I personally am okay with hunting for food purposes only; for only species that are abundant and whose populations are not likely to be negatively impacted by hunting. Hunting for the sole purpose of shedding blood disgusts me. I don’t even believe that the “culling” of certain species as endorsed by Fish & Game Departments is based on any really solid science. As my scout master told me at scout camp years ago, “If you kill it, you’d better eat it.” I know that offends some of you committed vegetarians out there, but I believe God gave us animals to enjoy looking at as well as for use for food and clothing. At the same time, I can’t imagine a God that enjoys seeing his creations slaughtered for pleasure and waste.

  3. Yeah Wren, another reason why Michigan rocks hard.

  4. First and foremost, it is blatently obvious that Charlie knows nothing about what he is talking about. Hunters shoot doves with a shotgun, not a rifle. Doves are a game bird and are very good eating. And yes, it takes a lot of “wits” to hit a flying dove with a shotgun.

  5. Oh Donald, I’m so sorry I don’t know the difference between one gun and another - how remiss of me (I do however know how to spell ‘blatantly’). Game bird? Frankly no matter how you wrap it up, there is naff all meat on a dove, and it really doesn’t take all that much intelligence to point an expensive, modern firearm at a flock of rather dim-witted birds…

You know, I was going to write some witty comment about throwing guns and hitting doves, but why waste my time? We’ll never agree and I know I’m right anyway.

  6. Actually Doves are very good eating and I would like to see you try to hit a Dove zooming across the sky 20-40 yards away.

  7. Joe: YAWN.
