Conservation Club: BirdGuides give-away

When we launched the 10,000 Birds Conservation Club last month we wrote out a list of FAQs and sent a little wish into the blogosphere which ran:

  • Q) I have a product and would like to be a part of this initiative - who do I discuss this with?

    * That’s great. Please contact us through the blog in the normal way, or mail Charlie Moores at charlie10000birds@gmail.com and I’ll get back to you asap!

Those few lines could have been one of those rather forlorn appeals that no-one responds to, but - and I really can’t explain how grateful we are - several future donors have already mailed me! One of those that did was Fiona Barclay from the mighty BirdGuides.com, which as anyone with a FatBirder top list button will know is the organisation/company which has occupied the #1 spot on the list for - oh, decades it seems (particularly to those of us perpetually trailing in their wake)…

There is a very good reason that BirdGuides is probably the most-visited birding site on the internet - they’re darn good at what they do. For those few of you reading this who don’t know what that is, to quote from their website: “BirdGuides brings you better birding through technology. We offer up-to-the-minute news and views on British and Irish birds, comprehensive online and mobile reference, a huge photo library and the best products for birdwatchers everywhere.”

Included amongst these “best products for birdwatchers everywhere” is a series of outstanding interactive DVD-ROMs. They’re not cheap - quality rarely comes for free as anyone who’s bought a pirated copy of a latest movie will know - but that only makes it more remarkable that Fiona has donated a copy each of TWO of the best DVD-ROMs that BirdGuides makes to give away to Conservation Club Members in our latest competition!

Yes, I kid you not!

We have a copy of Birds of the Western Palearctic Interactive (BWPi) which Lars Svensson (author of the Collins Bird Guide) says is “…easily the best-value buy I’ve made for years. Excellent.”

On the BirdGuides website BWPi is described thus:

BirdGuides and Oxford University Press have combined their resources to give you one great DVD-ROM that offers all of the following at the click of a mouse!

* The entire text of The Handbook of the Birds of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East (the complete 9-volume set, known as BWP).
* All the text, maps and artwork (including all the new species illustrations) from the Concise Birds of the Western Palearctic (the 2-volume set, known as Concise BWP).
* 75 comprehensively revised species accounts from the journal BWP Update.
* Over 2000 high quality video clips (more than 10 hours running time) from the extensive BirdGuides archive.
* A completely upgraded version of BirdGuides’ award-winning software offering many new features and redesigned to take advantage of modern high-resolution displays.
* species names accessible in 14 languages including scientific nomenclature.

AND we have been given a copy of British Birds Interactive (BBi) to give-away too. Why might you want BBi? Because as the BirdGuides website explains:

The content of 100 years of British Birds is so fascinating, so significant and so informative that it would be amazing just to have it all in one place - not just a whole book, or even a whole shelf-full but a whole bookcase of material all on one disk. But this DVD-ROM has been designed to provide much more than just a copy of all that content. It will also allow you to search, filter and display all the articles, photos and illustrations in ways that could never be possible with a mere set of journals.

Here are just some of the possibilities:

  • View all the photos of any species - these can be displayed as thumbnails giving
an overview of the photos available.
  • View any photo at whatever size you wish - click on any thumbnail to make it go
    ‘full-screen’.
  • Compare any photos side-by-side. You could put photos of Greenish Warbler down one
side of the screen, Arctic Warbler down the other and select whichever images of
each species best illustrate whatever you are looking for.
  • View all the papers on any topic - the papers on identification or taxonomy or populations
or behaviour can all be presented separately.
  • View all the papers, notes or letters about each species - e.g. not just the classic
identification papers on difficult groups but also the correspondence that followed.
  • View all the illustrations by any artist - just about all the top bird illustrators
are represented here. You can even compare the style of two artists side-by-side.
  • View any or all of the papers in any series including the BBRC rarities report or
Recent work by British Bird Photographers or Studies of less familiar birds.
  • View the monthly marathon or mystery bird features in sequence - struggle to identify
the puzzling photo then find out the answer (and how it should have been arrived
at) at the click of a mouse.
  • Search all the text for every mention of any word. You may have a specific research
topic e.g. kleptoparasitism or you may want to look up what has been written about
your local patch or you might just want to see every mention of your own name!
  • View the content in a number of ways - the design follows that used in the ground-breaking
BWPi DVD-ROM so you have the freedom to display the material in the same
    variety of ways:

    • Full-screen mode - the image or article can fill the screen or be shrunk to whatever
      size suits you best
    • Split-screen mode - you can split the screen in two, each with it own menu from
which you can select what appears on each side. If two illustrations were annoyingly
on different pages (or even issues) in the original journal you can now put them
      side-by-side.
    • Thumbnail mode - this gives you an overview of what’s available on that species
or topic e.g. a list of all the papers or photos or illustrations of Lesser Spotted
      Eagle
  • Filter the information on display. When you display the assets for any species you
can use the filter option to include/exclude articles, notes, letters, photos, illustrations
etc. so you can view just the photos or just the main articles.
  • Or you can just view all the issues in any year, click on any of them and see what
articles, photos, letters and notes were published inside.

The combined retail cost of this package is over 300USD/200GBP, but ONE lucky Conservation Club member can win BOTH by entering the competition below!

  • And if you’re not yet a Conservation Cub member click on the ‘Subscribe’ button below and join - it’s just 25USD/15GBP for a full twelve months and you can enter every single competition we run during that period - including ones that are already running (check out the Sound Approach and Wetlands and Wildfowl Trust competitions at the bottom of the page).

And remember 10,000 Birds doesn’t keep ANY of your membership fee - we give everything that’s left after the small PayPal charge (and any postage charges) to conservation projects that Members themselves get to choose!

The 10,000 Birds Conservation Club has been launched as part of our commitment to supporting projects on Critically Endangered/Endangered birds and to Birdlife International’s ‘Preventing Extinctions Programme‘, which we signed up to as Species Champions in January 2009.

species champions logoSpecies Champions are ”a growing community of Companies, Institutions and Individuals who share our concerns and demonstrate their commitment to protecting the planet’s natural heritage by funding the work undertaken by our Species Guardians”.

There are different ‘levels’ of Species Champion (requiring different levels of financial commitment). Whilst we joined the PEP at a ‘lower level’ 10,000 Birds is now officially a Species Champion along with such conservation giants as Sir David Attenborough and the British Birdwatching Fair, conservation minded businesses like Swarovski Optik (who also sponsor 10,000 Birds of course), In Focus, and WildSounds (the Species Champions for the Spoon-billed Sandpiper), and a small number of unsung individuals like Dr. Urs-Peter Stäuble, Ed Keeble, and Peter Smith.
