Core Team Bird List

My personal life list may be considerably larger than this one, my year lists (2006 and 2007) more targeted. However, this, the Core Team bird list is dearest to my heart.

Sara and I have certain rules to dictate which birds make our combined list and which ones do not. The primary condition is that we both must see the bird and recognize its markings, behavior, or the like. If one of us sees an oriole, for example, but the other only sees a black and orange blur, the bird does not make the list. We also try to keep the list in accordance with the American Birding Association Recording Rules.

This bird list is ordered chronologically, with the newest birds at the end. The first 22 birds are those that we perceive as so common in the Metro New York area that we could not possibly identify the first time we saw any of them. All birds after that are listed by Location, which could be a town, park, river, or other notable geographic marker, and Country or U.S. State. The Core Team life list currently counts 390 species, not including exotics, spotted in 13 states and 5 countries. Of these birds, 281 are on our ABA area list. Best of all, we’ve seen these birds together!
