Deforestation Escalates in Brazilian Amazon

Between Aug 2007 and July 2008, 8,147 sq kms of the Brazilian Amazon were cleared, an area more than twice the size of Rhode Island. Why? “Landowners often cut deeper into the forest to make room for cattle ranches and soybean farms.” Remove the carbon sinks and increase the amount of methane emitting cattle.   1. Such a protein dilemma… choose to not eat meat and substitute it with soy and you’re still screwing up the environment… damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

  2. Not quite. A huge amount of the soy grown on cleared land in the Amazon is used as cheap feed for chickens sold in KFC etc. - http://www.goveg.com/environment-wastedResources-rainforest.asp
    Whichever way you look at it it’s a sad fact that this is an “environment dilemma” - if you really want to help the environment looking at what you eat is far more important than changing a few lightbulbs…
