Diabolical to the Extreme!

By December 22, 2009 17 comments

Though there is a long history of diabolical quizzes on 10,000 Birds it has been quite some time since we had one.   And though I have great confidence in those who faithfully follow the blog I think this one quiz might be a bit too diabolical for even the most knowledgeable of 10,000 Birds readers.  To make it a bit easier I’ll say that all shots were taken in New York City this December.  The rules of the quiz are as the same as ever: list the birds you think are in each photo in the comments, using the exact common name for each species.  For example, if you think a bird is a sparrow make sure you specify which species of sparrow it is, like a Seaside Sparrow or an American Tree Sparrow.  The person who gets the most correct answers will win a lifer per month in 2010 and if you read this post and don’t try to identify the birds in the pictures you will not see a lifer for at least six months.  An answer post will go up sometime after Christmas but before the New Year.

  1. Wicked hard.

    1. White-throated Sparrow
    2. Song Sparrow
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Red-bellied Woodpecker
    5. Tufted Titmouse.

#2 is by far the hardest. I felt like I could make a reasonable guess at all of them except for that one.

  2. Cruel. I’ll take a shot at the last 3.

    1.
    2.
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Red-bellied Woodpecker
    5. White-breasted Nuthatch

  3. 1. Swamp Sparrow
    2. American Woodcock
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Hairy Woodpecker
    5. White-throated Sparrow

  4. Are all of the photos right-side-up?

  5. Wow – super hard, but I’ll take some random guesses:

    1. Red-breasted nuthatch
    2. American Robin
    3. Mourning dove
    4. Downy woodpecker
    5. Black-capped chickadee

  6. Fun.
    1. Song Sparrow
    2. Fox Sparrow
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Downy Woodpecker
    5. Black-capped Chickadee

Have a feeling others are right on a couple but figured I’d throw something different out.

  7. I usually ignore these diabolical quizzes but the last thing I need before my first big trip of the year is a lifer jinx!

    1. White-throated Sparrow
    2. Carolina Wren
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Downy Woodpecker
    5. White-breasted Nuthatch

  8. Diabolical I says, Diabolical!

4 of the 5 species have been named so far, but no one has named more than 3.

  9. I stand corrected, I guess you can get too close a look at a bird. But here’s my shot:

    1. White-breasted Nuthatch
    2. American Robin
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Red-bellied Woodpecker
    5. Black-capped Chickadee

  10. O.k. o.k., I have nothing better to do except buy a car.

    1. White-throated Sparrow
    2. Fox Sparrow
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Red-bellied Woodpecker
    5. White-breasted Nuthatch

  11. The name of the bird in #5 hasn’t even been mentioned yet. No more clues until Christmas…DIABOLICAL!!!

  12. #5 isn’t that Ash-throated Flycatcher, is it?

  13. 5. American Goldfinch

  14. 1. carolina wren
    2. house sparrow
    3. mourning dove
    4. red-bellied woodpecker
    5. black-capped chickadee

  15. 1. Carolina Wren
    2. Fox Sparrow
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Downy Woodpecker
    5. Pocket Lint

  16. I thought #5 might be the Ovenbird, but Ash-throated Flycatcher is just as likely. Pocket Lint is the best guess yet!

Enjoy the Holiday Weekend, 10,000 Birders!

  17. 1. Song Sparrow
    2. American Robin
    3. Mourning Dove
    4. Downy Woodpecker
