EU taxpayers supporting overfishing

“In the current EU budget period of 2007-13, Brussels is doling out …€4.3bn – or €837m a year [to fishing fleets]…some of the biggest cash windfalls went to ships and firms notorious for their questionable operations. A huge Spanish trawler named by Greenpeace as the most egregious offender against vulnerable stocks of Mediterranean blue fin tuna enjoyed EU subsidies of more than €4m…Three vessels blacklisted by Greenpeace were given handouts believed to run into millions.” Full story at Guardian.co.uk. The Birder’s Report becomes a Species Champion

Excellent news from Larry Jordan, the force behind The Birder’s Report: he’s joined BirdLife’s ‘Preventing Extinctions Programme’ as a Species Champion. The PEP focusses on saving the 192 most threatened birds on the planet, and with supporters with the conservation creds of someone like Larry perhaps it will become far better known in North America than currently. Let’s hope so - and who’ll be next to join I wonder?
