Favorite Unused Pics from California

The Prairie Falcon flying off a power poll. A Belted Kingfisher making my record shot of the Bolsa Chica Reddish Egret much more interesting. A Surf Scoter. And, of course, the Rock Pigeon, Common Pigeon, Feral Pigeon, whatever the heck you want to call it. How about Pigeon? Anyway, these are, as my sadly unclever title implies, my favorite unused pics from my trip to California back in January. Simply put, I birded too much there and this is the result: a bunch of pictures without a blog post to call home until now. Poor me. And even more poor me that Charlie went and got better pictures of some of these birds and got them posted before I did. Now that’s just not fair…

Does the reddish egret have plumes on the head or anywhere, for that matter? I thought I saw one once, but it is not common to the area we were in.

Spoon-billed Sandpipers in Bangladesh

A total of 15 Spoon-billed Sandpipers Eurynorhynchus pygmeus were sighted between Jan 14 -18 wintering along the south-east coast of Bangladesh. Thirteen were found in three different sites of Sonadia, Cox’s Bazar and two were seen in Bodormokam, Teknaf. The search for this Critically Endangered shorebird will be continued throughout this winter in Bangladesh. (With thanks to Sayam U. Chowdhury of the Bangladesh Bird Club).

It’s all in the breathing

Apparently alligators and birds share a breathing mechanism which may have helped their ancestors dominate Earth more than 200 million years ago. Research published in the journal Science found that like birds, in alligators air flows in one direction: the same research suggests that all dinosaurs, herbivores like Triceratops and carnivores like Tyrannosaurus, had bird-like lungs.
