Pearl-spotted Owl Glaucidium perlatum

The smallest owl in southern Africa (at just 18cm/7 inches it’s smaller than a Starling Sturnus vulgaris), the Pearl-spotted Owl is a common resident typically found in thornveld or broadleaved woodland.

This one was being mobbed by a variety of small passerines (including African Barred Warbler and Melba Finch) in the middle of the day, and the photos were mostly taken leaning out of the car window and pointing the camera up into a thick acacia…
