Public Lands Ranching: The Scourge of Wildlife…

…is the title of the first article that Encyclopaedia Britannica has published on the topic of the devestation caused to wildlife by allowing ranching on land that’s owned by the American public. Written by Dr. Mike Hudak, a leading expert on the harm to wildlife and the environment caused by public-lands ranching, it’s well worth reading.

One Response to “Public Lands Ranching: The Scourge of Wildlife…”

  1. You’re spot on: everyone should read the article. In spring 2006, I visited my brother who at the time was the park ranger at Tuweep, which is part of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. To get to this truly remote and spectacular place, we traveled for hours on dirt roads through land owned by the BLM. Cattle ranching was everywhere on BLM land. You could easily see the damage done by the cattle, predominantly loss of vegetation and soil erosion. In addition, the BLM sells mining leases, and we also saw huge operations mining for either uranium or plutonium. So few members of the public see any of this going on because the areas are not very accessible (remote locations, and you need 4-wheel drive and must be self-sufficient). On the bright side, we did see amazing wildlife once inside the national park boundaries. Thank you for sharing the link to the article.
