Organisation: Global Response
Who are we? Global Response is an international network for environmental action and education based in Colorado, USA. Global Response organizes international campaigns to help local communities and organizations that are struggling to stop environmental destruction and to defend their rights. Since 1990 we have celebrated victories in almost half of our campaigns (an excellent track record!). We develop campaigns only at the request of local communities that have organized to protect the natural environment and defend their land rights, cultural identity, health and sustainable livelihoods.
Aims of the Club: To increase the chances for local communities and indigenous peoples to succeed in their struggles to protect vulnerable ecosystems and defend their rights against destructive industrial projects (mining, oil development, industrial logging and agriculture, etc). For example, current campaigns support: 1) Kenyan farmers who are trying to protect a bird-rich wetland from industrial agriculture projects; 2) indigenous Maya and Garifuna people in Belize who oppose oil development in a rainforest/wetland; 3) islanders in the Bahamas who oppose tourist resort construction that threatens mangrove forests and marine life; and others.
Membership: Adults, teens and children in 100 countries make Global Response campaigns successful. Current membership is 6,000. Members receive action alerts by mail or by email, and write letters to targeted officials. Members also receive newsletters, campaign updates and the annual report. Teachers, classrooms, church groups, clubs as well as individuals are invited to participate in our very effective letter-writing campaigns. To register to receive action alerts and/or make secure online donations, visit www.globalresponse.org Membership dues are voluntary, but much needed!
Publications: Global Response prints and distributes age-specific action alerts for 4-6 new campaigns each year. Children receive Young Environmental Actions, teens receive Eco-Club Actions, and adults receive Global Response Actions. Newsletters and Annual Reports are posted on the website. Through our “Quick Response Network,†email subscribers receive more frequent action alerts (average 2/month) and regular campaign updates.
Conservation: Global Response campaigns help local communities protect natural resources of global significance, such as coral reefs, wetlands, forests, rivers, and habitat for endangered species.
Website: At www.globalresponse.org, you can 1) read the current campaign action alerts (different versions for all 3 age groups); 2) download model letters to assist you in writing your own; 3) read campaign updates and victories; 4) search past and ongoing campaigns by geographic region and date; 5) see tips on effective letter-writing; 6) see tips for teachers and parents; 7) read newsletters and annual reports … and lots more!
