Sharpe’s Longclaw: Fundraising

Fundraising.

We here at 10,000 Birds have set ourselves a target of raising 2000 US Dollars (USD) to support Dominic and the “Small African Fellowship for Conservation”. We have already pledged to donate a minimum of 250USD ourselves and are asking our readers to (please) donate a dollar each through the Chip In widget below (though of course we’d be very grateful for more).

Chip In collects money to a PayPal account that we have specifically set up for this appeal, and the money raised will be forwarded by myself to an existing and secure bank account in Kenya belonging to the National Museums of Kenya (see below), who will be responsible for passing the funds in monthly sums to Dominic.

Details of the National Museums of Kenya account:

ACCOUNT NUMBER 01080-35107800
ACCOUNT NAME National Museums of Kenya
BANK NAME Standard Chartered Bank
BANK ADDRESS Westlands, Nairobi
SWIFT SCBLKENYAXXX

2000 USD is not a huge amount to raise (at least in western conservation terms), but in a country like Kenya it goes a long way, but we’re under no illusions that it will be easy: if you’re considering donating but aren’t sure whether to or not please be assured that 10,000 Birds (Mike, Corey, and myself) will take absolutely NO MONEY whatsoever (or for any reason) from the funds raised, and every cent/penny/euro raised will be going to Dominic. Please note though that PayPal does administer a handling charge: this is not something we can control, and we do not benefit in any way.

We have a number of strategies in mind to promote the project and raise the funds, including give-aways (we’re not licensed to operate lotteries and wouldn’t want to) and asking advertisers to sponsor the appeal in return for advertising space on the project main page [please email charlie10000birds AT gmail DOT com if you would be interested in advertising).

Additionally we would like to acknowledge the generous gift of a new pair of binoculars provided by Eagle Optics, and five copies for use in a competition of the excellent “A Guide to the Birds of East Africa: a novel” provided by the author Nick Drayson and his publisher Penguin Group

It’s also important to point out that the validity Dominic’s work has already been recognised by grants from the British Ecological Society and the Conservation Fund of the African Bird Club.

  1. This is such a GREAT idea you guys! Not only for this individual cause but to get together as bloggers and become a force for conservation all over the world. I think this can spread like wildfire. Anything I can do to help, just let me know. I will send a separate email.
