Spoon-billed Sandpiper - the situation just gets worse

By Charlie March 18, 2009 1 comment

Two surveys of the wintering grounds of Spoon-billed Sandpiper Eurynorhynchus pygmeus starkly illustrate the growing pressures this Critically Endangered species faces. The second annual survey on the coast of Myanmar found one new wintering site, but numbers overall were less than in the previous year. In Vietnam, where more than 27 individuals were recorded in the mid-1990s, not one was seen in Jan 2009. For a longer report go to the BirdLife International website, and to find out one reason numbers are plummetting visit the Saemangeum page on the Birds Korea website.

  1. A very sorry tale indeed. It would be a tragedy to lose this fantastic little wader from our planet.
