There are approximately 10,000 bird species on this beautiful planet. Welcome to 10,000 Birds, where, between us, we expect to eventually see every single one. Expect plenty of commentary on nature, science, politics, and blogging along the way.
10,000 Birds is powered by Mike Bergin, Charlie Moores, and Corey Finger.
We'd love to hear from you so drop us a line.
Last year, we introduced you to Timeless Holiday Gifts for Birders. For this holiday season, we’re ushering in a new tradition: Review Week. Starting tomorrow, we will be posting one new review of a wild bird or birding book or product each day for at least the next seven days. Add this to the long list of reviews we’ve already written and I’d say you’re spoiled for choices for the birder in your life!
Good news, via Mark Anderson of Birdlife SA, that the Lesser Flamingoes are breeding again on Kamfers Dam’s artificial flamingo island. There are 8517 nests on the island, the first chicks were observed more than a week ago, and there are hundreds (and perhaps thousands) of adults incubating eggs. Kamfers Dam is the first breeding locality (in recorded history) for the species in South Africa, the fourth in Africa, and just the sixth in the world! Surely now the spectre of development MUST be removed from the site once and for all.
