We Are Shadows of Tender Fury

By March 6, 2012 25 comments

How can there be peace when the people who cause war still clamor for the perpetuation of our misery? The arrogance that lives in the government palaces and the houses of the lords of land and big business is still screaming for war and death for our race; they won’t tolerate the idea that indigenous [...]

Selling Birds Short: A Heretical View Of Avian Intelligence

By October 25, 2011 4 comments

A profound and deep understanding of birds is hard to complain about. When people like Arthur Cleveland Bent and John James Audubon would be envious of your skills, there is reason to rejoice. Besides possessing an encyclopedic memory for field marks, songs, calls, status and distribution of every bird in the world (ask me about [...]

She’s gone b’y, she’s gone

By August 28, 2011 5 comments

Up until January of this year our airport was at Nanisivik, 30 kms away from town. It was built there to serve the now ghost town, Nanisivik, and Arctic Bay. Besides being a long way from town it had weather issues. At 2200 feet on a mountain top, they built it in a cloud. One [...]

Here are some of the most beautiful pictures I have taken: Toucan Barbet at Refugio Paz de las Aves Oilbird at Cueva de los Tayos Flame-faced Tanager at Recinto 23 de [...]

How Fast Can A Roadrunner Run?

By April 4, 2011 7 comments

Every child who has ever seen a cartoon featuring Wile E Coyote and Road Runner has to have wondered if poor Wile E ever had a fair shot at catching the Road Runner.  According to Mark Lockwood’s Basic Texas Birds: A Field Guide, with or without Wile. E. Coyote chasing it, a Greater Roadrunner can [...]

Polygynandry and the Alpine Accentor

By March 15, 2011 23 comments

So you have probably come across cases of Polygyny (one male, multiple females), as in the case of lions, Red-winged Blackbirds or Northern Harrier; and you may even have heard of a few cases of Polyandry (one female, multiple males), such as Red Phalarope and many Jacanas. Polygynandry seems to be rather rare, but some examples of other species which may potentially be partially or fully polygynandrous include: Alpine Accentor, various Tinamou species, Purple Swamphen, Acorn Woodpecker, Indigo Bunting, Bicknell’s Thrush, Smith’s Longspur, Galapagos Hawk, Tasmanian Native Hens and Dunnock.

Autumn in New England

By November 1, 2010 12 comments

Autumn in New England.  Just those four little words can evoke so much.  I am sure that anybody who has spent any time in the northeast during the season immediately begins to think of Mother Nature’s own fireworks display of color as trees turn various shades of amber and gold, reds, oranges, and yellows, contrasted [...]

Geese and a Gull at Jamaica Bay

By November 10, 2008 6 comments

When the sun is shining and it is in the fifties on the Fahrenheit scale on a Sunday  in November I’ll be birding.  Of course.  Jamaica Bay was where I wanted to be, mostly because I wanted to get some shots of the waterfowl flying from the West Pond to the bay with the sun [...]

By October 29, 2008 6 comments

Once again Jory has agreed to provide 10,000 Birds readers with an identification quiz.  This one is different from his typical quiz: as a specific bird is not being identified and word play is involved instead of field marks and bird behavior.  Good luck (you’re going to need it!) and remember to post your guesses [...]

Eight Shots of Ruby-crowned Kinglets

By October 19, 2008 16 comments

Yesterday I took a long walk across several parks in Queens looking for birds.  And while many species crossed my path, none were as endearing nor as energetic as the numerous Ruby-crowned Kinglets (Regulus calendula) that seemed to be everywhere.  Not only were they everywhere but they were fearless as well!  Several times one would [...]

Enjoying the Common Birds at Central Park

By October 14, 2008 6 comments

This past weekend Daisy and I were pleased to host my brother, Jonathan, his fiancee, Shannon, and their adorable three-year-old daughter, Natasha.  Though keeping up with a three-year-old is pretty darn exhausting it was great having her around, especially as everything in the city is interesting to a three-year-old from upstate New York.  Whether it [...]

Black-throated Green Warbler

By October 10, 2008 1 comment

At Fort Tilden on Sunday the most cooperative Black-throated Green Warbler (Dendroica virens) entertained us birders who were there in search of rarities for at least ten minutes.  We could have stayed longer, and would have, under almost any other circumstances, but we had rarities to chase and really, considering the looks and pictures we [...]
