Bird Video With An iPhone

By May 7, 2012 2 comments

An iPhone 4S is an amazing tool for birders, as Sharon Stiteler has already let readers of 10,000 Birds know. And while using the iPhone in conjunction with optics is pretty cool, I have discovered that sometimes you don’t even need to use anything but the phone itself. Still pictures are fine but using the [...]

Great Horned Owl Attacks Great Blue Heron

By April 10, 2012 7 comments

The Great Blue Heron nest camera at Cornell’s Sapsucker Woods had essentially been the typical nest camera. Bird lays eggs, sits on eggs, etc. That changed in the early morning hours when a Great Horned Owl decided that, well, watch for yourself! Wow!

Sh*t Birders Say

By March 26, 2012 12 comments

Jason Kessler is back with the funniest birding movie of the year. Sh*t Birders Say delivers more laughs in 3 minutes than… well, actual birding! Even the credits are amusing. Take the test: if you laugh at least twice, you are definitely a birder.

Baby Bird Likes Bluegrass

By March 21, 2012 2 comments

It’s tough to make out what species the baby bird is but it sure likes bluegrass. Lead singer Josh Williams managed to keep the song going and the crowd sure appreciated the unexpected guest star in this video shot almost a year ago at the Doyle Lawson Bluegrass Festival in North Carolina. If bluegrass isn’t [...]

Slow-Mo Video of Red-cockaded Woodpecker Foraging

By February 22, 2012 No comments yet

You may remember the awesome encounter Doug and I had with Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at the Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area from this post. If you are some kind of idiot savant you might even remember that the last image of a Red-cockaded Woodpecker that I shared was of the bird holding a grub in its bill. [...]

Madagascar: The Last Inheritor of Gondwana

By January 27, 2012 2 comments

Putting nature on TV is a tricky business. First there is the inherent irony of getting people to sit on their butts in front of a screen in order to show them the vast and beautiful world outside said screen. On top of that, every editorial choice not only says something, but says a million [...]

Is This A Bird Bites Cat Story?

By January 17, 2012 2 comments

This is one diabolical Hooded Crow!  If you are a person who is averse to seeing cats get the short end of the stick you might not want to watch. Hat-tips to Julie and Dawn.

Review of Your Backyard

By January 13, 2012 7 comments

I must say that I never expected us at 10,000 Birds to receive an email asking us if we wanted to review a DVD made from a company dedicated to producing “children’s nature resources (from a Creation perspective).” After all, my views on creationism are pretty darn clear. Nonetheless, I thought it might be interesting [...]

Gull Steals Camera

By January 3, 2012 1 comment

This morning on Google+, I shared a charming video of an octopus stealing a diver’s camera with the comment, “This never happens to birdwatchers!” Apparently I spoke too soon. Lars Fosdal replied with a June 2011 video of a gull in Cannes stealing a camera and flying away with it.  Think either video is staged?

Why You Should See The Big Year When It Opens

By October 11, 2011 15 comments

Timothy Barksdale is a birder, Prairie Chicken documentarian, and wildlife videographer well-known for his stunning Adventures with Birdman. He’s got a different view on how bird watchers should respond to The Big Year than the one Corey recently expressed here. We’re pleased to share his thoughtful perspective and plea for your consideration… Dear Friends and [...]

Never Put Fish Down Your Pants

By October 4, 2011 3 comments

If you ever wanted to put fish down your pants let this YouTube video serve as a cautionary tale.  Seriously.  Never, ever, ever put fish down your pants.  Why?  Just watch the video already, sicko…

Back Battle on the Booming Grounds

By August 15, 2011 2 comments

The Greater Prairie Chicken, once common throughout North America, has undergone rapid population decline, mostly due to habitat loss. The tallgrass prairie that once blanketed the Midwest has been almost completely converted to cropland, leaving Tympanuchus cupido painfully vulnerable. The Greater Prairie Chicken’s story seems to be a tragic one, but Timothy Barksdale sees something [...]

She Turned Me Into A Newt

By July 7, 2011 4 comments

Peasant: She turned me into a newt! Sir Bedevere: A newt? … … … … Peasant: I got better. The entire scene from which that bit of dialogue comes, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is one of my favorite scenes ever from a movie.  The absurdity of mob rule is summed up well, [...]

Gotta love the Alps

By July 5, 2011 4 comments

So, I have now been living in the Alps for about 4 years. And I cannot claim that it was easy at first. I grew up in South Africa where my garden list was over 200. I then lived in Central America where there were more bird species than my bird books (and my competence) [...]

‘Way Down’ by the N.A.S.A. Project

By July 3, 2011 No comments yet

If you’ve never seen this music video, something like an avian West Side Story with Blue Jayz vs. Northern Cardinalz, take a few minutes to enjoy the gorgeous hand painted avian aggression renderings by L.A. artist Sage Vaughn. Sure it’s a year old, but it’s new to me! (Hat tip to Michael McDonald.)

Review of Watching Waders

By April 23, 2011 3 comments

Here at 10,000 Birds we have already reviewed Watching Sparrows, Watching Warblers, and Watching Warblers West.  Somehow, we never got around to reviewing Watching Waders, another in the series of excellent films by Michael Male and Judy Fieth.  Watching Waders is chock full of great footage, as one learns to expect after having seen other films [...]

Angry Birds: The Movie (Trailer)

By March 28, 2011 5 comments

There is really nothing to say about this other than, um, wow? Don’t forget that if you want to be able to identify the Angry Birds we have you covered. That is all.  Enjoy. Hat-tip to Arvind Says.

Review of Watching Sparrows

By March 27, 2011 2 comments

I never would have thought that a film that focused entirely on North American sparrows could be so delightful.  But the new second edition of Watching Sparrows* by Michael Male and Judy Fieth, who have a whole series of bird films already produced or in production, not only kept me staring at the screen but drew [...]

A Birdwatching Movie: Pelican Blood

By February 19, 2011 9 comments

Does anyone out there in the birding world know anything about the 2010 film Pelican Blood?  IMDb gives this as the storyline: Pelican Blood tells the story of Nikko, a funny but left-of-center young man living in London. Following a disastrous break up with his girlfriend, Stevie, he’s taking life one day at a time, throwing [...]

Identifying Angry Birds

By February 18, 2011 22 comments

Yet again, despite my best efforts, I’ve been sucked into the insatiable vortex of popular culture. Then again, how long could I resist an addiction that encompasses three of my favorite things, namely birds, video games, and my Droid? Perhaps you’ve heard of this game Angry Birds… The survival of the Angry Birds is at [...]
