Putting nature on TV is a tricky business. First there is the inherent irony of getting people to sit on their butts in front of a screen in order to show them the vast and beautiful world outside said screen. On top of that, every editorial choice not only says something, but says a million [...]
This is one diabolical Hooded Crow! If you are a person who is averse to seeing cats get the short end of the stick you might not want to watch. Hat-tips to Julie and Dawn.
I must say that I never expected us at 10,000 Birds to receive an email asking us if we wanted to review a DVD made from a company dedicated to producing “children’s nature resources (from a Creation perspective).” After all, my views on creationism are pretty darn clear. Nonetheless, I thought it might be interesting [...]
This morning on Google+, I shared a charming video of an octopus stealing a diver’s camera with the comment, “This never happens to birdwatchers!” Apparently I spoke too soon. Lars Fosdal replied with a June 2011 video of a gull in Cannes stealing a camera and flying away with it. Think either video is staged?
Timothy Barksdale is a birder, Prairie Chicken documentarian, and wildlife videographer well-known for his stunning Adventures with Birdman. He’s got a different view on how bird watchers should respond to The Big Year than the one Corey recently expressed here. We’re pleased to share his thoughtful perspective and plea for your consideration… Dear Friends and [...]
If you ever wanted to put fish down your pants let this YouTube video serve as a cautionary tale. Seriously. Never, ever, ever put fish down your pants. Why? Just watch the video already, sicko…
The Greater Prairie Chicken, once common throughout North America, has undergone rapid population decline, mostly due to habitat loss. The tallgrass prairie that once blanketed the Midwest has been almost completely converted to cropland, leaving Tympanuchus cupido painfully vulnerable. The Greater Prairie Chicken’s story seems to be a tragic one, but Timothy Barksdale sees something [...]
Peasant: She turned me into a newt! Sir Bedevere: A newt? … … … … Peasant: I got better. The entire scene from which that bit of dialogue comes, in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, is one of my favorite scenes ever from a movie. The absurdity of mob rule is summed up well, [...]
So, I have now been living in the Alps for about 4 years. And I cannot claim that it was easy at first. I grew up in South Africa where my garden list was over 200. I then lived in Central America where there were more bird species than my bird books (and my competence) [...]
If you’ve never seen this music video, something like an avian West Side Story with Blue Jayz vs. Northern Cardinalz, take a few minutes to enjoy the gorgeous hand painted avian aggression renderings by L.A. artist Sage Vaughn. Sure it’s a year old, but it’s new to me! (Hat tip to Michael McDonald.)
Here at 10,000 Birds we have already reviewed Watching Sparrows, Watching Warblers, and Watching Warblers West. Somehow, we never got around to reviewing Watching Waders, another in the series of excellent films by Michael Male and Judy Fieth. Watching Waders is chock full of great footage, as one learns to expect after having seen other films [...]
There is really nothing to say about this other than, um, wow? Don’t forget that if you want to be able to identify the Angry Birds we have you covered. That is all. Enjoy. Hat-tip to Arvind Says.
I never would have thought that a film that focused entirely on North American sparrows could be so delightful. But the new second edition of Watching Sparrows* by Michael Male and Judy Fieth, who have a whole series of bird films already produced or in production, not only kept me staring at the screen but drew [...]
Does anyone out there in the birding world know anything about the 2010 film Pelican Blood? IMDb gives this as the storyline: Pelican Blood tells the story of Nikko, a funny but left-of-center young man living in London. Following a disastrous break up with his girlfriend, Stevie, he’s taking life one day at a time, throwing [...]
Yet again, despite my best efforts, I’ve been sucked into the insatiable vortex of popular culture. Then again, how long could I resist an addiction that encompasses three of my favorite things, namely birds, video games, and my Droid? Perhaps you’ve heard of this game Angry Birds… The survival of the Angry Birds is at [...]
Jackson Childs was kind enough to supply a copy of Gulf Crossing: An Essay on Bird Migration, the movie he wrote, produced, and narrated, to give away on 10,000 Birds. If you have no idea what I am talking about you can read my review and then come back and enter the giveaway. Or you can [...]
The idea that tiny songbirds that weigh far less than the change found in the average pocket manage to migrate 600 miles across the Gulf of Mexico was long considered fanciful. It was assumed that a few, at most, might make such flights, but most birds were thought to be circum-gulf migrants rather than trans-gulf [...]
There are penguins and then there are penguins. This particular penguin, a Gentoo Penguin Pygoscelis papua, is one heck of a brave (or foolhardy) penguin. Watch as it literally jumps onto a sea lion seal, a sea lion seal that is none too happy about being used as a trampoline, I might add. I know [...]
Jeff Bouton has shared a great video on the behavior of a pair of Eastern Screech Owls in his yard. It is well worth watching the entire five minutes. …
Via Kim, The Curious Birder, who posted this great video on Facebook. If this doesn’t make you laugh or at least grin, well, 10,000 Birds will give you your money back… Have a nice weekend…hope it goes better than the kayaker’s goose encounter did!
