‘Tis the season to send out catalogs

By Charlie December 17, 2007 2 comments

The catalog industry sends out more than 20 billion catalogs every year — 67 catalogs for every man, woman, and child in America! It takes millions of trees to produce the catalog industry’s mountains of catalogs, and Endangered Forests are being devastated in the process. Worst of all, most catalogs have no recycled content and are discarded without ever being looked at. Learn more at Forest Ethics.

Charlie works for an airline and has birded all over the world for twenty years. He wants to be a writer, and thinks no-one would believe his life could be so charmed if he didn't take photos of as many of the birds he sees as possible. Blogging with 10,000 Birds fits his aims, needs, and insecurities perfectly. Really - do birders get much more fortunate than this?

  1. There is something each of us can do about this, at least in the US. I recently learned about CatalogChoice.org, a free service that allows you to “opt out” of unsolicited catalogs, reducing the number of catalogs in your mailbox and the associated environmental footprint.

  2. I agree wholeheartedly about the ridiculous number of catalogs that are sent out this time of year. It saddens me to think of the waste (I get catalogs from places I’ve never even heard of, much less shopped). I read on another birding blog about Catalog Choice (www.catalogchoice.org) who helps cease the mailings of catalogs. I only started using it so have not yet seen results but I’m hoping it is a true solution to this issue.
