Today Is Penguin Awareness Day

We here at 10,000 Birds are unsure how today became Penguin Awareness Day (though some jingoists think it’s National Penguin Awareness Day) but here we are, being aware of penguins. Enjoy Charlie’s marvelous photos of Motherly Love Penguin-Style and remember the sad day when Silo and Scrappy broke up.

PAD was on 1/20. As far as I can tell, it was popularized by a single blogger, The Penguin Geek starting in 2007. Funny to see how much online coverage it’s gotten this year. Proof that one bird blog can have an impact.

Less Birds Around Fukushima

A team of researchers has found that the populations of common birds around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan has plummeted. Most disturbingly, the populations of species that the area has in common with Chernobyl has fallen more in Fukushima than they did in the site of worst nuclear disaster in world history.
