Welcome to 10,000 Birds! With so many new visitors arriving every day, we felt an overview of the site might be in order. After all, we wouldn’t be very gracious hosts if you showed up here and we didn’t take the time to give you a tour, would we?
First, a bit of history. Mike Bergin started this site way back in the dark ages of bird blogging, so long ago, in fact, that it is believed that he actually wrote the first entries on a typewriter! He also came up with the brilliant idea of a bird blogging carnival, I and the Bird, the archives of which you can access through the badge on the sidebar.
Yes, one of the fun things about this blog is all the different items to explore. If you want to know who writes 10,000 Birds and why you should visit our “About” page. We have photo-galleries, reviews, a full page of links, and a host of other options. Just click around and see what there is to find. Who knows, maybe you will find some new section of the blog that even we don’t know about yet!
Oh, and Mike isn’t the only one who blogs here at 10,000 Birds. In addition to yours truly, Corey Finger, there are a horde of amazing Beat Writers that regularly post about specific (and not so specific) topics. We also have a page just for bloggers who once blogged on 10,000 Birds but no longer do.
We strongly encourage our readers to comment as we feel that it really fosters a sense of community when people interact in comment threads. You may have noticed that some folks have images appear next to their comments instead of a gray profile. These images are called “Avatars” and if you open a free account at Gravatar an image of your choice will show up next to your comments both here at 10,000 Birds and in many other locations around the internet. Neat, right?
Are you worried that you might miss some of the great content here at 10,000 Birds? Don’t fret! You can easily subscribe in a variety of ways, including having each and every post delivered to your inbox. Just click here to subscribe (It’s free!).
Do you wish that you had an easy way to go digging through our archives? No problem! Our archives are right here and you can look through them by topic or date. Enjoy!
Hopefully, 10,000 Birds will continue to grow and entertain both you, our readers, and us, the bloggers. What do you like and dislike about 10,000 Birds? What would you like to see more of? Less of? Is everything great? Does something really tick you off? Let us know, either in the comments or by contacting us.
You know, when you guys first merged I was a bit overwhelmed, but I like what you have done with the place!
My brother, sister, and I are still pretty new at the blogging thing, but we are noticing more and more how good it is for promoting birding and making connections with other birders.
You embrace birding and conservation and all things bird-y so keep us busy reading your posts!
I am going to nominate your blog for a Blog of the Day Award.
this is wonderful way to introduce yourselved to everyone! So many new bloggers find the many blogs that are out their and it is so nice that you were able to great them like this!
Thank You Professor Finger for 10,000 birds 101!
I’m based in the Baghdad area of Iraq. Just got here for a 12 month tour. I would love to be able to identify some (to me) unique birds during my down time. Is there a sight to assist with this?
