Welcome to 10,000 Birds

Welcome to 10,000 Birds! With so many new visitors arriving every day, we felt an overview of the site might be in order. After all, we wouldn’t be very gracious hosts if you showed up here and we didn’t take the time to give you a tour, would we?

First, a bit of history. Mike Bergin started this site way back in the dark ages of bird blogging, so long ago, in fact, that it is believed that he actually wrote the first entries on a typewriter! He also came up with the brilliant idea of a bird blogging carnival, I and the Bird, the archives of which you can access through its badge on the nifty green field at the bottom of the page, which serves as 10,000 Birds’ sidebar.

Yes, one of the fun things about this blog is all the different items to explore. The six most recent front page posts, three links to the Latest News items, basic information about the blog like who writes it and what it’s all about, and the link to buy 10,000 Birds bumper stickers. And I haven’t even mentioned the static bar of goodness at the bottom of the page that leads to our links, archives, reviews, and a host of other exciting options!

Oh, and Mike isn’t blogging all by his lonesome anymore. In addition to yours truly, Corey Finger, the ace British birder Charlie Moores has hopped on board in between hopping on flights. He has been transferring all of his posts over from his old digs on the internets while Mike does the same from the old 10,000 Birds; so make sure you spend some time in the archives. Not only that, but Welcome Wednesday, our newest feature, is written by a wide variety of people with something to say about birds, and I highly recommend that you check it out and consider submitting.

And, in addition to our bumper stickers, you can now get 10,000 Birds T-shirts. Just click that neat T-shirt spot on the right and one could be yours! While you’re over there, check out a couple of our sponsors, and consider making your cellphone sound like a bird of your choice or going on a birding tour in some exotic locale. Or, if you want to help support 10,000 Birds but don’t want to go out of your way to spend money, then just click through to Amazon.com at the bottom of the page and make your normal purchases. It doesn’t cost you anything and you’re helping to support your (hopefully) favorite birding blog.

To the right side of each post are our subscription options: you can subscribe to 10,000 Birds via RSS feed or email. That’s right, you can have each new 10,000 Birds post sent to your own personal email account! Other options on the right include links to 10,000 Birds posts related to the one you’re reading and a gorgeous picture of a bird that is a click through to an informative and entertaining post about the subject.

Finally, on the top right of the blog there are numbers leading to our assorted bird lists. Pretty entertaining stuff, especially if you are a lister or are curious about where we’ve been. Just below that is a search box that lets you search the entire contents of 10,000 Birds, in case you haven’t found what you’re looking for yet.

Hopefully, 10,000 Birds will continue to grow and entertain both you, our readers, and us, the bloggers. What do you like and dislike about 10,000 Birds? What would you like to see more of? Less of? Is everything great? Does something really tick you off? Let us know, either in the comments or by contacting us.

  1. You know, when you guys first merged I was a bit overwhelmed, but I like what you have done with the place!

My brother, sister, and I are still pretty new at the blogging thing, but we are noticing more and more how good it is for promoting birding and making connections with other birders.

You embrace birding and conservation and all things bird-y so keep us busy reading your posts!

  2. I am going to nominate your blog for a Blog of the Day Award.
