Summer can turn on a dime, don’t you think? One week you’re slaving away for the man (or woman) while the next finds you maxing and relaxing in the vacation habitat of your choice. If you’re lucky, your turn might still be coming up! Where are you watching birds this weekend? Comment below on the excitement you have planned!
The family and I are still enjoying Virginia Beach but pretty soon we’ll be headed back to parts north. Charlie is recovering from some California adventures and still has Hong Kong and Nigeria in his near future. Corey, I suspect, will be lighting candles and performing ritual dances in the hopes of luring more rare Siberian shorebirds to Jamaica Bay!
As you prepare for an outstanding August weekend, be sure to celebrate Sky Watch Friday…
Watch the skies for ponderous pelicans, like this American White Pelican with lunch (photo by Charlie)
We have a lot of spot-billed pelicans here. Some pictures here:

I just discovered this blog and I like it a lot 🙂
Maybe you could be interested in the Polish project of life stream transmission from the White Storck’s Nest. At the end of August they leave to Aftrica, so last chance maybe to see the new born storcks and their parents:

Nice pelican shot Mike!
This weekend a few friends and I will be staying in the FL Keys and looking for a few specialities such as Antillean Nighthawk, Mangrove Cuckoo, and Roseate Tern. It should be fun and when the heat of the day settles in I’m sure snorkeling will be on the agenda.
A most amazing photo- love the birds- we have so many in AZ!
Cool in flight shot, Mike! Great SWF Post!
Cheers, Klaus
Just found your site through SWF. I do much of my birdwatching on the north shore of Lake Erie. I am also lucky to live just a short drive from Point Pelee National Park – one of the world’s premiere birdwatching spots, so – no excuses for not getting out with my binoculars!
Just a lovely shot. He looks so at ease!
Great shot of the pelican…
Hmmm… Wonder where I’ll be birding — don’t know, but I need to get out there this weekend… Maybe I’ll get lucky and have something fly over close enough that I can get a shot…
Was trying to shoot two shorebirds in the tidelands yesterday morning just before sunrise out near Tiburon, (Marin County), and I sort of got a shot, but the background wasn’t much, and I had to crop it way down… It’s on today’s edition of the DailyDuo at http://www.photoarrow.com/duo/d080808.html if you want to take a look
I grew up in Queens Village, and so the words “Jamaica Bay” caught my eye in your post. I now live in Southwest Florida, just 30 minutes away from Sanibel Island. There’s a wildlife refuge there called Ding Darling, and they make a big deal out of it when the white pelicans come to town during “snowbird” season. In general, Ding Darling is an excellent place to bird watch, especially at low tide.

Great flight great photo.
That’s a phenomenal photo. wow.
Fantastic post, wordless!
Blue sky marvelous!
Great shot! Tink is right about Ding Darling being a great place for bird watching. I lived in Bradenton most of my life and made many trips to Sanibel Island and Ding Darling. Now I live in the foothills of the Blue Ridge and have all new birds to photograph.
This is the first time (I swear) I see a pelican flying.
That pelican really improves the sky view. Great shot!
Beautiful White Pelican shot. Great blog.
A great photo of the beautiful white Pelican. Great blog.
Mike, I just returned from 6 days at Lake Tahoe. I got in at least 2 hours of birding each morning and got some decent photos of Sierra birds.
