Where Are You Birding This Second Weekend of September 2009?

By September 10, 2009 13 comments

Is summer over yet? The solstice has not yet arrived but it sure feels like fall around here. The birds seem to think so too considering how many begin fall migration before September even begins! What will you be doing this weekend and will you be watching birds? Please share your plans in the comments below.

I’m more likely to observe art than avifauna since the Clothesline Festival, Rochester’s largest and longest-running fine art and crafts festival, is coming to town. Corey and Charlie will probably have better luck in the bird department but my eye for artwork is uncanny.

Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!

Look out for flecks of gold against an azure sky!

  1. I will be in Acadia National Park. Hoping to see some shore birds, eagles, and osprey among other things.

  2. Avis Dam in Windhoek. It’s warming up in Namibia now with Summer approaching, and so the birding is soon going to get more interesting with migrants moving in.

  3. I’ll be at my folks’ home in Saugerties, NY, hoping to see some migration in action.

  4. Looking forward to the return of the Goldfinches to Texas this winter.

Nice photo of the gold against the blue.

  5. He is lovely, great shot:) Yes the summer does feel as if it is fading fast:(

  6. I’ll be leading a fall photography walk in Paradise Meadows, Strathcona Provincial Park on Sunday but packing my binocs along as well. Expect to see red crossbills, gray jays, red-breasted nuthatch, dark-eyed junco, and hopefully the elusive three-toed woodpecker, a Paradise Meadows specialty.

  7. Who knew there was so much going on in Rochester? Enjoy — I love art and crafts festivals — and don’t forget to show us what you buy.

Don’t know if I’ll be birding formally this weekend, but with migration starting, there’s a lot passing through the yard. I’ve already seen cedar waxwings and a great egret today. So those are the best birds so far.

  8. I love itt when they pose like that!

  9. great photo, I plan to be out at our lakes this weekend enjoying the company of friends and watching the tree line.

  10. Great pic of the Goldfinch. Ours left in the middle of Summer. I’m wondering if they’ll come back through this Fall…hoping so :) You mentioned art&craft show. I finished my first try at watercolor pencil. Planning on attending the art & craft shows in the area this Fall.

  11. We just returned from over 2 weeks in Romania and 3 days in the Damube Delta. This weekend I plan to stay home and enjoy the variety of birds at my many feeders which 2 Amish children faithfully tended while I was gone. The following weekend is the Midwest Bird Symposium at Lakeside, OH.

  12. Ah, Romania–incredible this time of year!
We’re bustling around getting ready for events in Canada and Mexico over the next four weeks, so will probably stick close to home. Probably head out to the sewage ponds to enjoy the shorebird show.

  13. Got to enjoy the birds here at our feeders today as I had planned. and had a total of 29 species, even though many of the summer residents have started their journey southward. At one time I counted 60+ goldfinches gobbling up the seeds.

Also, I did pay a visit to an Amish farm nearby where a Northern Wheatear had been seen, verified, and posted on the rare bird alert. People were coming from near and far to view this life bird for most. Definitely not a regular migrant, but something attracted it to a wood pile on Emory Yoder’s farm.

A perfect day with a bright blue sky here in the hills of Amish Country, OH

    Bill
