Where Are You Birding This Third Weekend of December 2009?

The holidays are well and truly upon us. So, if you live anywhere near my latitude, is winter weather. The silver lining to these dark clouds packed with snow and sleet is that winter birds are close behind! What are you doing this weekend and will you be birding? Share your plans in the comments below!

I’m planning on watching Eagles, Falcons, Cardinals, Ravens, and Seahawks this weekend as my fantasy football juggernaut enters its league semifinals. Corey will be participating in the Queens Christmas Bird Count so stay tuned for borough rarities. Charlie plans, as usual, to kick around his estate and admire the local avifauna… he never goes anywhere fun anymore!

Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!

My friend Renato Fernandez Ravelo (did you see his phenomenal volcano photos?) recently attended an annual Guatemala City fireworks display called El Noche de los Deseos or Night of Wishes. I for one am glad he brought his camera…

  1. Christmas Count on Saturday (Chatham, NY) and Christmas County on Sunday (Southern Albany County, NY). I’m tired.

  2. CBC in Miami-Dade, FL on Saturday. Then on Monday I will do part of the Everglades CBC. Great birding coming right up!

Of course I did a quick count at work today and saw a nice adult Roseate Spoonbill and about 30 other species, so the birds are always good.

  3. Sandy Hook CBC on Sat. Cleaning the basement on Sunday. FUN.

  4. Let’s see…the Bozeman, MT CBC on Saturday and the Livingston CBC on Sunday…I love the CBC time of year. And I even have a new pair of insulated overalls…no more freezing to death for me.

  5. Queens CBC on Sunday, Coastal Flushing area, as in birding the East River. Weather prediction: 30% chance of snow. Rather snow than rain.

  6. That’s a brilliant capture.

  7. @Donna: You and me both (would prefer snow to rain). And let’s hope the Ash-throated Flycatcher, Cackling Goose, and Pine Warbler all stick around until the count.

  8. CBC Rapid City, South Dakota Sunday

  9. Wow, lots of CBCs out there! And I’ll be doing one too: Vicksburg, Mississippi! (But I’ll be birding the Louisiana side.)

  10. Very colorful!

    My Sky Watch Friday entry.

  11. Fantastic skies!

  12. Add another CBC to the list, this one in Raleigh. I’m in a group with a pretty good section so I’m looking forward to it.

  13. No birding for me this weekend - I have to work on grad school applications, again!

  14. Dutchess County (NY) CBC on Sat. Thought I’d be snowed in on Sunday but we only got a dusting. Best bird? Brown Thrasher - not found in our circle since 1971!
