Thanks MaryRose. This was the first ‘gallery’ I ever posted I think I’m right in saying - I’d just got a new digital camera and happened to be in the north-west so tried it out at Martin Mere. I have to say the results aren’t too bad considering

Charlie,I love these beautifully taken photos. How lucky you are to get such amazing pictures. I watch and monitor a flock of Whoopers here in Co. Meath , Ireland, not too far from where I live. Recently came across a dead whooper which I am reliably informed was a rarer ‘penny face’, so called because of it’s beak markings. Unfortunately it hit overhead cables and didn’t survive. I could be mistaken but I think you may also have captured a ‘penny face’ in your third photo down - third swan from the left.

Then go birdwatching! At least, this Time of India article says that you can tell the character of your future husband by the first bird you see on a birdwatching trip on Valentine’s Day. It is the art of ornithomancy. No word on how male birdwatchers are supposed to find out about their future wives, but, then again, what are the odds of them needing that kind of information?

BirdLife and the Birdwatching Fair

In its third and final year as Global Sponsor of the BirdLife Preventing Extinctions Programme, the British Birdwatching Fair (BF) has delivered yet another huge boost to species conservation with the presentation of a cheque for £263,000 (US$411,500), the proceeds from the 2009 fair. This takes the total raised by the Fair in its three year support for the Preventing Extinctions Programme to £754,000 (US$1.18 million). Time surely for Tim Appleton and Martin Davies, the co-founders of the BF, to be knighted for their services to conservation…

Great Bustard Survey, Ukraine

I’ve just posted a short report by Al Dawes on the Great Bustard Group blog about a survey that took place in the Ukraine at the end of January. There are some lovely photos and some very interesting questions posed about what happens to northern populations of Great Bustards in the winter. A longer report will be posted in the next issue of Otis.
