Wiltshire Winter Wonderland

Photos of snow? Yes, I appreciate that many visitors to 10,000 Birds will also be shivering under a blanket of snow and freezing air, but I would guess that not so many are seeing the winter as it grips a beautiful English manor house and gardens. So especially for my American friends who would like to see the English countryside - especially from the comfort of their own home/office - here a few photos I took yesterday of the wonderful Great Chalfield (an estate that some of you will know I’m extremely fortunate to live on) before anyone else got up and the snow really was lying crisp and deep and even (in fact I chose to go out while it was still snowing to try and get the highly contrasting light effects in the finished images)…

Charlie works for an airline and has birded all over the world for twenty years. He wants to be a writer, and thinks no-one would believe his life could be so charmed if he didn't take photos of as many of the birds he sees as possible. Blogging with 10,000 Birds fits his aims, needs, and insecurities perfectly. Really - do birders get much more fortunate than this?

  2. Magical, Charlie. Just beautiful. There’s nothing quite like the world when it’s been transformed by snow.

  3. Hi Charlie,
How do the resident birds cope and what can they find to eat under such weather conditions? Here in South Australia, we are having day temperatures above 40C at the moment. Such weather contrasts between hemispheres.
Tragic news yesterday from Western Australia, where is seems a large proportion of the rare Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo population have died from the extreme hot weather conditions.
