Woodchat Shrike

Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator
Portland, Dorset May 2005

A rare spring and autumn migrant on Portland, there have been just over 50 previous records - the majority in May, though there have been records as early as March.

This bird was aged as a first-summer male because of the slight scaling on the flanks, retained (and worn) flight feathers - note the ginger wing coverts in the flight photo, and the ill-defined mask feathering.

He wants to be a writer, and thinks no-one would believe his life could be so charmed if he didn't take photos of as many of the birds he sees as possible. Blogging with 10,000 Birds fits his aims, needs, and insecurities perfectly. Really - do birders get much more fortunate than this?
