Does anyone out there in the birding world know anything about the 2010 film Pelican Blood? IMDb gives this as the storyline:
Pelican Blood tells the story of Nikko, a funny but left-of-center young man living in London. Following a disastrous break up with his girlfriend, Stevie, he’s taking life one day at a time, throwing all his energy into his hobby: bird spotting Just as life becomes bearable, Stevie arrives back on the scene, causing a rift between Nikko and all his friends, who warn him she will destroy him. They are fully aware of how the couple first met: on a suicide website, pledging they will ‘end it all together’. As their intense, disturbing and highly sexual connection resumes, the relationship between Nikko, Stevie, his friends and his hobby are thrown into questionable chaos. Pelican Blood is a funny and passionate look at the things that make us tick, and the things we tick off the list.
Sounds good, no? But have any actual birders seen it? The preview is below.
Of course, everyone is focused on and looking forward to that other birding movie due to come out in October but in the meantime why not check this one out? Though after reading this review I have to wonder if it is worth tracking down at all…
No thanks. Looks like too much trauma-drama for my taste.
Corey, I just read the book. It’s like “Trainspotting” but about twitching. Loved the book.
I saw the film got lame reviews though. But it was probably not birders that reviewed it.
On the other hand, the book has so much birding slang and manerism, that I think it would be hard to read for anyone not being a birder. Thus, some hope that the film could work well for a birding public.
Still trying to see the movie–our video supplier in V’couver still hasn’t got it. I thought the book was very good (reviewed in Birding some years ago now).
when I first saw a blurb for this film the other day, I thought “this has to be a joke.” but no! birding is showing up in more and more films, it seems. 🙂
I have not seen the movie, in fact, I haven’t heard of it. Thank you so much for bringing it up. I don’t expect it will win Oscars but how many birding movies are there? I’ll try to see it just because of that. Thanks again.
Has anyone ever seen “Rare Birds” a movie from 2001 where a guy in Newfoundland fakes a Labrador Duck sighting in order to bring birders to his failing restaurant? Here’s the trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi3422421785/. It would have been more realistic if it had been a Common Snipe or a Black-tailed Gull…
I’ve seen Rare Birds. It was bad, really bad. And, features some of the worst stereotypes of birders since “The Birds”.
Horribly bland movie, not worth the watching.
@Everyone: Thanks for the info. I’m going to have to pick up the book.
And I will agree wholeheartedly that Rare Birds was absolutely horrifically awful.
