Hello all. This will be my last Avian Quiz. I am hanging up my computer? My binoculars? Hard to tell. I hope you’ve had as much fun with these quizzes as I have had. Here is this week’s quiz:
I was fortunate to visit a college friend these last few days. I live in the US, in New York State. My friend also lives in the US, but in a different state. A state that I have never visited before. [Yes, that’s a hint. It’s not nearby.] Please do NOT guess the species. Instead, give another clue to the identity of this species.
The clues:
1. I saw 3,000 individuals of this species. Give or take.
2. I was sitting comfortably outside an elementary school.
3. I was sitting with a few hundred people watching this spectacle.
4. This was a life bird for me.
5. There is a species in my home area that is a close relative, although I’ve never seen anything like these numbers. Usually only a handful at one time.
6. Wobbly.
Remember, please do NOT guess the species. Instead, give another clue to the identity of this species.
Good luck!
Did someone reference the “put a bird on it” sketch while you were there?
Fare-thee-well, Jory. Your quizzes will be sorely missed. Corey’s “diabolical” attempts are no match to the original (no offence, Corey 😉 ).
Happy birding trails.
Smoky.
I too, will miss your quizzes.
Also, cigars.
Nick
Hmmm…cigars and smokestacks…a dangerous combination.
SO LONG JORY, BUT NEVER EVER HANG UP THE BINIS….WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO…ONE LAST TIME?
I’m quite certain I know which species and where your friend must be located!
Another clue if I’m right: a species of least concern, but with certain changes in human habitation, some Audubon chapters have formed a committee to conserve a specific man-made structure they use in screaming frenzies that most humans no longer do.
Named for a mineralogist.
Farewell, I really enjoyed these quizzes.
Consensus has it that the name of the guy is not pronounced the way a Frenchman would pronounce it …
Wow, one I actually think I know! How about “sunset” as a clue … also, did they “swoop” into a “screaming frenzy”?
Thanks for the quizzes … though this is the only one I had a shot at, I enjoyed learning from them. You’ll be missed. And I hope you enjoyed the show!
Thank you for your good wishes. It warms my heart.
A nice easy quiz to end things out. You all seem to be on the right track.
While named after a famed mineralogist, the species in question was actually “discovered” by a famous ornithologist.
For me, I shall set back in my easy chair, smoke a good cigar and play a single-person card game.
