How was your weekend? Any good birds? Don’t be shy… tell us about your best bird!
My best bird was a Sharp-shinned Hawk in my front yard, stalking my bird-barren bird feeder. I wouldn’t even have noticed the hawk had it not been persuaded to abandon its perch by a crow, no doubt in an act of indirect vengeance against the local, crow-eating Red-tailed Hawks. The answer to both Corey’s best bird and photo of the weekend is “Ipswich Savannah Sparrow” which he spotted out at Breezy Point. Charlie is still up to his elbows in Great Bustard business.

I think that she’s laying eggs soon.
This weekend it was a toss-up between a Common (or Eurasian, depending on what you prefer) Teal and a Tufted Duck.
several flocks of Cedar Waxwings
It was a yellow bellied sapsucker the has staked out a bunch of small magnolia trees in the backyard

A Brown Creeper. Nothing fancy. But cool. Saw it while stuck at home with a touch of flu. Why was this little bird cool to see? Wrote about it on Two-Fisted Birdwatcher. “102 degrees in the shade.” http://twofistedbirdwatcher.com/?p=2115.
I didn’t see any birds this weekend. I’m trying to shake a bad case of Killer Martian Death Plague (aka common cold) before my owling trip next weekend, so I stayed indoors all weekend with hot tea and a book.
@Joey: The bird is just fluffed up to stay warm…
@Christopher: I see, you were holding out on us Bloggerhead Kingbirds!
@Carrie: Get better and get those owls!
Probably the Chestnut-sided Shrike Vireo, but the Bushy-crested Jays and Golden-browed Warbler was fantastic too.
@ Nat: oh shut up, ey? 🙂 🙂
Mine: house sparrow or domestic pigeon, take your pick.
My best birds of the weekend was a pair of Peregrine Falcons.
After spending a fruitless 2 hours in the woods having spotted nothing more than a couple of common crows, I noticed a bird box no more than 20 yards from my car that seemed to be missing an opening-very odd. On closer inspection, I realized that there was an eastern screech owl poking his head out of the hole, following my movements. Very cool- my first owl in the wild.
