Happy New Year! Did you realize that your Best Bird of the Weekend is, at least for now, your best bird of the whole year? Don’t worry… you have 51 more weeks to improve on your current best.
Corey had a host of birds to choose from as his Best Bird of the Weekend as he spent Friday morning birding at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Orange County, California. He saw a lot of birds he doesn’t usually get to see but he most appreciated the up close looks at Western Grebes. He didn’t see them do a courtship dance but their elegance was more than enough to leave him happy about the experience. Since 2016 has been pretty birdless for me so far, I’ll go with my first bird of the year, American Crow. Sure these raucous corvids are dirt common, but their adaptable intelligence is impressive when you think about it.
How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend? Tell us in the comments section about the rarest, loveliest, or most fascinating bird you observed. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment.
Pied-billed Grebe at FDR Park in South Philly, courtesy of the Delaware Valley Ornithological Society’s field trip. Good look at a sun-basking-in-January(?!) Garter Snake too.
I’m going to count Friday as it was a long weekend and claim a draw between a Common Loon and a Long-eared Owl.
Got in a bit of freezing cold birding near Niagara Falls, best being Harlequin Duck, Long-eared Owl, and Snoy Owl.
