This past weekend in the United States was important for a number of reasons. Much of the Mid-Atlantic is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy with many still awaiting power or roving aimlessly in search of a gas station with, you know, gas. This was also the last weekend of President Obama’s first term. No matter which way the political winds blow come Tuesday, next weekend will feel different. Finally, many of us not struggling to pull it all together after the storm or campaigning in crucial swing states were granted one extra hour this weekend to do something fun. How did you spend your bonus hour?
My Best Bird of the Weekend was a lone loon, probably a Common Loon, winging swiftly along the Lake Ontario shoreline. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was a surprise addition to his Queens list. To find out what it was and learn how he found it just click on through to his blog post about post-hurricane birding in Queens…
How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend? Tell us in the comments section about the rarest, loveliest, or most fascinating bird you observed. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment.
Best bird of the weekend came on Friday for me. There was a neck-markered Canada Goose at a small lake in DuBois, PA. This was the first time I’ve seen anything wing-tagged or neck-markered! I’m still waiting to here back from the Bird Banding Lab on its origin.

My weekends always include Mondays. Today my best live bird was a trio of Evening Grosbeaks watching a bunch of Pine Siskins and American Goldfinches at a feeder, the Grosbeaks decided against trying to muscle in so moved on after a few minutes. Also nice were: a late Great-blue Heron, a solitary female Wood Duck, several White-crowned Sparrows and a singing Carolina Wren.
I found a remnant of a Blue Jay’s wing and was quite smitten by all the shades of blue, so I wrote about it on my blog at http://www.mybirdoftheday.ca
The best birds of the weekend for me was a flock of Sandhill Cranes in Michigan. From a distance I thought they were Canadian Geese, but as they got clooser the sounds and flight were much differnt than Geese and the sight was quite amazing.
I did not blog about this sighting, but did blog about the winter frost around our home in Michigan with pictures of birds gathering around the bird feeder. Winter is really starting to set in here in Michigan. My Blog: http://www.backyardbirdparadise.com/backyard_birding_blog.html
