Are we going to talk birds here or discuss how awesome it is that the NY Giants are going to the Super Bowl? Oh, birds? I should have guessed that. Big Blue fans can leave proud comments and hyperbolic predictions in the comments!
My Best Bird of the Weekend™ was a Blue Jay celebrating a rare Rochester snowfall by running through its entire routine of croaks, creaks, and squeaks. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was any one of the five Iceland Gulls spotted at the Beacon Train Station where a massive-by-New-York-standards twitch for a Slaty-backed Gull seen the day before failed to turn up the guest of honor.
What was your best bird of the weekend? Tell us in the comments section about the rarest, loveliest, or most fascinating bird you observed. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment.
Despite not even managing to be a year bird, mine was a Bronze Shining-cuckoo I saw on Saturday. Only the second one I have ever seen in New Zealand in five years, so a rare bird by any reckoning. And a great long look in the sun too, shame I didn’t have my camera! Having seen the other subspecies in Sydney last week allowed for an interesting comparison of the two forms.
Stupid, stupid, stupid Giants [weeps].
Best bird: the awesome young Gyrfalcon near the San Jacinto Wildlife Area. It was THISCLOSE…!

Lucky you! Me? Nothing…. Friday dust storm and Saturday? Not sure, cleaning up after the dust storm I guess.
(Sunday our weekend is over)
But maybe I can catch something good tomorrow to make up for it 😉
One lonely Pine Siskin in a large flock of goldfinches on my nijer feeder.(all 24 feeding positions filled most of the weekend)
Nothing new for my year list, but at 75 and at an inland location, this was to be expected.
Best bird of the weekend was a Peregrine circling over my office on Sunday. What was I doing at the office on a Sunday? Well, life sucks sometimes.
I missed out on a Slaty-back as well (snowstorm Saturday when I would have been right where it was found and Patriots-related stuff Sunday), but the Wood Thrush I came up with Sunday is actually the way better bird.
Best bird of the weekend was a flock of Eastern Bluebirds dining on bittersweet in Sudbury, MA.
A gorgeous sunrise and spot-billed ducks!

Due to my very odd schedule my birding tends to happen on Wednesdays or Thursdays, which is my weekend, so to speak. And my “weekend” was pretty cool, considering I saw a Barred Owl that has taken up residence on the expansive grounds of a local art museum: http://www.flickr.com/photos/seanpaulkelley/6727976095/in/photostream
Best bird of the weekend is a lifer – Black-headed Gull seen along Delaware Bay in NJ. Saddest moment of the weekend – realizing that I was actually rooting for the Giants. Sad.
We had a Peregrine intent on getting a shorebird in Roebuck Bay, so more exciting than Jochen’s office experience! It was the first for the year-so can go on the list!
@Clare: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! 😉
Two Bald Eagles sighted this past weekend. One in a nest that appeared to be doing some housekeeping. The other on our way out of the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge (Florida) perched in a tree. The one in the tree was right next to the road and was just beautiful. I took some great pics! Also saw a juvenile bald eagle soaring way up high in the sky amongst roseate spoonbills!!!!
This weekend also went to the Raptor project show at Brevard Zoo…Check it out if you have the opportunity!
Mine was the three Iceland Gulls at the train station in Beacon on Sunday, too. Too bad the Slaty-backed didn’t show up.
