Every week, the winds carry the unexpected hither and yon. Were you hither? Were you yon? If so, we’d love to hear what you found there.
Alas, the winds blew nothing exceptional my way. In fact, my weekend avifauna was so prosaic that a lone House Finch stood out as the most interesting sighting. Corey’s Best Bird of the Weekend was any of the four Cave Swallows he saw in Queens, part of an amazing invasion of the northeast by this species after sustained southwest winds for nearly a week. Finding them was great, but Corey would have been much happier had he managed to find one of the many Franklin’s Gulls that also showed up in the northeast on Friday, as he still needs that bird for his Queens list.
How about you? What was your best bird of the weekend? Tell us in the comments section about the rarest, loveliest, or most fascinating bird you observed. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment.
Mine was Rufous-necked Wood-Rail at Caldera, Costa Rica- good spot for this tough bird. No rarities from the ferry but still picked up one more year bird- Bridled Tern (along with the wood-rail). Getting close to 650 for the year.
Very red Crimson Chats!! Made it to 330 now and will update the list when we are back among electricity and running water!
