How was your weekend? Any good birds? Tell us about your best bird.
I never made it down to Pennsylvania as anticipated so I had to content myself with birds from my own backyard; fortunately, Tufted Titmice made scintillating company. Corey thought his best birds of the weekend would be Eastern Meadowlark and Vesper Sparrow for his Queens County list, but that was before he made a successful run for the upstate New York Swainson’s Hawk. Can’t wait to hear about that twitch! Charlie, alas, was too occupied with matters both mundane and meaningful this weekend and failed to notch a significant sighting.

Well I live in a pretty urban setting and my yard list can be counted on my hands and toes. While driving down my alley on the way home on Saturday I noticed a little bird flitting down the alley ahead of the car. I figured it was just another house sparrow but as I got closer it flashed a bright yellow rump! I’d say a yellow-rumped warbler visible without binoculars and hanging out in my urban alley was my best bird of the weekend for sure. We’ve had three inches of snow this morning so I hope he’s somewhere far south of here by now.
This past weekend was the Big Sit! On Saturday I was able to join 3 Amish guys at our officially registered site. We had a total of 65 species and the best bird species were a peregrine falcon and totally unexpected barn swallow. There were other “good” birds like an orange-crowned warbler that appeared in a flock of yellow-rumps. We had a great time observing from within our prescribed 17 feet circle. If you haven’t been involved you should next year, and is always on the Columbus Day Weekend.
I got up to see the Swainson’s Hawk on Saturday – a lifer! Thanks to all who have kept us updated on the bird.
My best bird of the weekend was a Green-and-rufous Kingfisher in Pipeline road, central Panama
Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, Parque Natura: Probably most amusing was a soaking wet Squirrel Cuckoo trying to dry out in the weak sun. But it’s a great place to bird, and it’s hard to choose from among Gray-necked Wood Rails, Plain Chachalacas, Melodious Blackbirds, and on and on all up and down the park sidewalks Saturday morning.
Best bird of the weekend? Do I have to pick one? I was birding at Cave Creek Ranch in Portal, AZ. Four lifers in fifteen minutes: magnificent hummingbird, blue-throated hummingbird, red-naped sapsucker, Williamson’s sapsucker.
