I’ve been seeing plenty of White-breasted Nuthatches lately, including one inquisitive excavator exploring my vinyl siding. When I first heard the tapping, I imagined a Downy Woodpecker was the culprit, but then glimpsed the nuthatch abandoning its fruitless labors. Corey exulted in the many White-rumped Sandpipers at Jamaica Bay. As for Charlie, we’d be better off wondering what his best birder of the weekend was, considering his adventures at the British Birdfair!

Can you ID the shorebird to the right of this White-rumped Sandpiper?
As playgrounds in Leimen / Heidelberg aren’t particularly reknown for being potential IBAs or vagrant traps, I was rather happy about hearing a group of Firecrests sing. However, the best situation by far was my son mimiking a Jay mimiking a Common Buzzard.
I didn’t get most of what I was after, but the Wood Warbler was a nice find. They really do have a gorgeous yellow breast; so unlike the rest of their genus.
I had a worm-eating warbler in Central Park, but not quite at the weekend. The bird on the right looks good for dowitcher; I’ll guess it’s Short-billed 😉 Happy happy migration!!
I was so excited to get my life Crab Plover on Friday! It was my first sporadic twitch, as I was in the middle of a trip when the news came in so we drove an hour and a half to the northern tip of Qatar to see them (4 out of 7 birds). Unfortunately, they were too far away for good photos, but I made up for that with my first good looks at Hoopoes! They were fun to photograph and videotape.
As for the shorebird, it’s probably a dowitcher, and if it was a Long-billed it would already have its own article! So Short-billed is my guess.
Birding washout. 🙁 Was all set to go off in search of Cliff Swallows yesterday and the weather, drizzly/rainy at dawn, just got worse as the day wore on. I was so disappointed.
So the best bird of the weekend for me was the local Great Egret hanging out at a lake while I jogged by.
I’m a hopeless case with shorebirds but I’ll third the guess that it’s a Short-Billed Dowitcher.
Had a Baird’s sandpiper and a least sandpiper on the shores of Lake Michigan. Both were new to me. The leasts were cute, and the Baird’s was elegant.
