Which bird species do you think is the biggest attraction to visitors of your lodge (please only name one species)?

The absolute superstar is, undoubtedly, the Southern Cassowary!

What is the name of your lodge, and since when has your lodge been operating?

Licuala Lodge has been operating since the late 1990s.

How best to travel to your lodge?

It’s advisable to use a car to cover the long distances of Queensland’s Tropical North.

What kind of services – except for accommodation and food – does your lodge offer to visiting birders?

We operate as a Bed and Breakfast only.

What makes your lodge special?

We offer an off-the-beaten-track space in Mission Beach, birth town of the Great Barrier Reef conservation movement, where you can slow down, unwind, and recharge energies with a delicious homemade breakfast. The fact that the property is located by the locally famous Lot 66, a cassowary corridor, makes it an ideal place to try your luck at spotting one of these majestic birds.

What are the 10 – 20 most interesting birds your lodge offers good chances to see?

  • Southern Cassowary
  • Orange-footed Scrubfowl
  • Bush Stone-Curlew
  • Bar-shouldered Dove
  • Laughing Kookaburra
  • Sulphur-crested White Cockatoo
  • Black Butcherbird
  • Olive-backed Sunbird
  • Helmeted Friarbird
  • Honeyeaters

What is the best time to visit your lodge, and why?

April to November because it’s outside of the wet season.

Is your lodge involved in conservation efforts? If yes, please describe them.

We help our guests support Mission Beach Wild Care with their recycling efforts and collaborate with the Community for Coastal and Cassowary Conservation with cassowary sighting data collection to feed Queensland’s WildNet database.

What other suggestions can you give to birders interested in visiting your lodge?

Bring a swimsuit to enjoy our swimming pool and insect repellent. Queensland’s sun demands to have sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat ready.

Do you have activities for non-birders? If so, please describe.

Mission Beach offers a number of beach and rainforest walking tracks and also more energic activities such as snorkeling, river rafting and even skydiving. It’s very well sorted with restaurants.
