I try not to think in terms of a “year list”. I try not to think in terms of listing in general. If you asked me my Life List total, I’d reply, “Not sure, somewhere over 1,000 and under 1,250.” Of course, it’s all a sham because deep inside of me is a hardcore lister who really wants to spend all my time obsessing over birding strategy. I don’t let that part out much, just every once in a while for a trip to Massachusetts for a Fieldfare or a detour to Ontario for a Great Gray Owl.
However, I did happen to glance at my year’s total in eBird the other day and realized that I’m not doing too bad. This is mostly because I started the year in Florida, and in February got to spend a few days birding the Los Angeles area. (The photo above is of Marbled Godwits at Dockweiler Beacher, California.) So, in spite of missing a lot of winter birds I should have seen in 2013, like Common Eider, and either missing or neglecting to chase rarities like Tufted Duck in Long Island and Thick-billed Murre in Brooklyn, I am approaching 200 birds as of April 6th. Of course, many of my fellow northeast birders will catch up soon. The birds I saw in Florida will soon be up here. And, I still will probably squash that hardcore lister inside, birding my local patch instead of chasing every possible new bird. But, I have decided to join the fun. So, here for public consumption, is my 2013 list. Links are to photos of the birds listed, in the locations listed. (After I wrote this, I tried for Tufted Duck again, in Suffolk County, near where I missed it in February, and Voila!)
My goal is to break 600 on my ABA life list, which I just may do if I get to Texas this year.
Notes on the list: This list is in eBird order. Bolded names are life birds; italicized names are ABA birds; * marks exotic species, not an ABA-countable bird.
