The section of the Appalachians threatened by mountaintop removal mining represents the southernmost breeding range for many bird species. It’s also prime breeding habitat for Cerulean Warblers, which are declining partly because of their forests are being destroyed along with the mountains. So it is really important for birders to get involved with this issue.
(I’ll just note that my representative introduced the bill.)
I was astounded that my (new, I just moved) representative, Gregory Meeks, was not already a sponsor. But I was nice and polite to the staffer that answered the phone and I have high hopes!
