Experienced birders know that birding is as much about listening as it is about seeing. While 10,000 Birds has traditionally focused on writing and photography—the visual side of birding—we’re now adding podcasts to highlight the importance of sound. Some of our authors already produce birding podcasts, and we’ll be sharing brief descriptions of each new episode here on 10,000 Birds.

Women have been integral to birding since it started…but we haven’t always been recognized for the contributions and impact we have. In an effort to grow the voices represented in the birding community, Hannah started Women Birders (Happy Hour). Don’t fear – there’s a little fun too with a unique bird-themed cocktail.

In this episode of the Women Birders (Happy Hour), Hannah chats with Sudeshna Dey, an avid and competitive birder based in India. Sudeshna is the top woman birder in India and has her sights on anywhere else there are birds. The featured bird is a Narcondam Hornbill, a unique species found only on a small island in the Andaman Sea, paired with a fig-based gin cocktail.

Hannah Buschert started birding in college thanks to a required Biology of Birds course and a professor who included Sir David Attenborough’s Life of Birds to punctuate lessons. Almost as if by accident, Hannah landed the dream job of Park Ranger in the Rio Grande Valley at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park where she guided many birders who filled her head with far-off destinations and incredible birds. Consequently, her beat is Adventures in Birding Here and There.Called home to the Oregon Coast to operate the family motel, in her free time Hannah leads Tufted Puffin walks and escapes to guide at birding festivals and explore the world as often as possible. Hannah is passionate about travel, tourism, and birding and hopes to inspire others through her podcasts: Hannah and Erik Go Birding, Women Birders (Happy Hour), and Bird Nerd Book Club.
