Whether you’re an optimist or pessimist, you have to admit that our glasses are filling nicely, if not a bit slowly. This season of extreme cold (or heat) is on the wane, leading to a more moderate and eventually migratory season. Plus, if your kids have been home all week like mine have, they’ll be back in school in no time. Celebrate by getting out into nature this weekend! How will you be spending this weekend and will there be birding involved? Share your plans in the comments below!
I need to find a few winter birds that haven’t yet crossed my path. Where I’ll find them is anybody’s guess. Corey is equally uncertain about where he’ll be birding this weekend, but pleased to report that he will be arriving at that place in his new automobile.
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday. Also be sure to come back Monday to share your best bird of the weekend!
If you look up to see birds soaring overhead, you may be as perceptive as a birder…
I’ll be leading a birdwalk at Coachella Valley Preserve near Palm Springs CA. Sure to see Phainopeplas and perhaps some other desert specialties such as Verdin and Cactus Wren. But one never knows!
I’ll be birding probably with my snowshoes or skis in forests of Finland, looking for woodpeckers. We have nearly 1 meter of snow here now.
Searching for Rock Sandpipers in BC. Searching, searching….
With South Shore AUDUBON at Pellam Bay Park , Bronx, New York in search of owls, raptors and any of the northern birds on vacation to this woodland area.
Great skyward look.
If the rain holds off, we will be birding in Hyde Park as part of the Bird Study BS Merit Badge seminar I’m leading. (If it rains, we review the CBC reports from previous years.)
Beautiful shot of the bird in a beautiful blue sky. Standardized test preparation–how interesting. Mickie
Birding Bald Eagle State Park tomorrow morning and searching CREP fields for a Short-eared Owl tomorrow evening. Saturday will be spent at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area and Sunday will be spent studying and writing papers in the Penn State Library! (all locations in Pennsylvania).
Gorgeous!
Chasing the sun down
I’ll be sitting by my french door , nikon on tripod, waiting for one of the red kites to finally sit down on the fencepost so I can get a decent shot.
Coffee and cake close at hand 🙂
That kestrel looks bigger than our U.K. ones.
Heidelberg for me again – I must find a Black Woodpecker (more likely than Redpolls) to maintain Corey’s attractive green-tinged complexion, but fear it’ll just be the usual Long-tailed Tits, Hawfinches, etc.
@Joco: American Kestrels are in fact considerably smaller than their European namesakes, and actually rather cute.
I’ll be searching fairly close to home as my time this weekend is a bit limited. Our new house is being photographed for a great design blog. http://www.themarionhousebook.com/
Winter birds are what I need. Doing a big year in ontario Canada. Winter is coming to an end soon. Specifically, I’m looking for hoary redpolls, bohemian waxwings and owls…
