The arrival of August stuns those of us in the Northern Hemisphere into an introspective panic. Is summer really almost over? Have I squandered it?!? Absolve yourself of summertime guilt by enjoying this weekend to the hilt. How will you do it? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to mention if you’ll be birding!
The family and I will be spending the weekend at Lake Skaneatles, one of the Finger Lakes. Seth and I may try to sneak in some birding if we can find someplace other than Montezuma to visit. Corey will be tearing up Long Island like his life depends on it; expect a plethora of reports, including some of a pelagic nature, next week. Charlie will continue his indefatigable efforts on behalf of rare and endangered birds everywhere.
Whatever your plans this weekend, make time to enjoy SkyWatch Friday…
Clear Skies over Cupsogue, one of Corey’s many Long Island hotspots
Willcox Playa for shorebirds tomorrow (early tomorrow, so we can get back in before the playa starts to bake!), then the AZ Sonora Desert Museum Saturday, then scouting for my Five-striped Sparrow tour later in the week. Should get to actually see some birds this weekend.
I’ll be in Alley Pond Park gathering data for the NYC Audubon’s foraging heron study.
I Like your Sky Watch
Great photos and writeup.
Probably bird Ft. Worth Nature Center and Refuge (3500 acres of varied habitat).
Come visit…

Back in the blog groove again…
Trying to catch up with everyone.
a beautiful capture of the wetlands…hope you have a wonderful birding weekend.
I love watching birds…
You’ll love Skaneatles… the Finger Lakes is a favorite area of ours…
Seneca is also beautiful… lots of vineyards…
Fox Run was a favorite spot… Lou will give you a great tour (If he’s still there… that was 6 yrs ago! wow)
Forsythe NWR, Brigantine Division, recent site of several observations of a last remaining nemesis bird. I will kick the extralimital Roseate Spoonbill that’s been hanging around for the past week out of the way if it comes between me and a Black Tern. I’m pretty sure I’m just kidding, but don’t test me, Spoonbill!
This is a marvellous looking wetlands, prime for all species.
So tranquil. Superb shot!
Mmmm, delicious wetland! Today I am off to Cookham in the UK looking for Red Kites and dragonflies. Last time I went I was treated to watching these wonderful flyers playing in the breeze at eye level – I was sitting on a hill eating my sandwiches and they were so close I felt I could touch them. Thrilling – and once so incredibly rare here in the UK that it was a real privilege.
Lovely shot, I’d love to join you, its pretty cold and wet here and the birds are hard to photograph in the rain with little light.
I’ll be flying over to NYC to join Corey on his Long Island trips. I mean someone has to show the poor guy some decent birds, right?
Sigh.
I just lied.
I’ll be birding the boring fields south of Heidelberg again but things are not looking as bleak as they used to in june and july: I am waiting for the beginning of raptor southward migration.
Looks like a beautiful place,
great captured!
Looks like a great spot to do some birdwatching!

Nice plans, all. I am, as ever, jealous.
Maria, I agree. Fox Run is a great place. Some Finger Lakes wineries are really worth a visit.
